She was showing off a very large, very sparkly diamond on an important finger.

“I can’t believe she said yes,” I said in a low voice, my heart sinking.

“I take it you don’t like the guy,” Alex said.

“I’m not the one who needs to like him. I don’t think she really likes the guy.”

“Damn.” He didn’t ask more questions, he’d get the full story later.

We stopped our sneak to congratulate and hug May. I did my best to be happy for her, and worked even harder to look happy, but I’m not sure I was successful.

Later, in bed with Alex, I pressed a kiss to his chest. “Thank you,” I said.

“You’re welcome. It doesn’t look like much now, but I think—”

“No. Thank you for loving me.”

He tightened his arms around me. “You never have to thank me. I’m the lucky one. I’m the lucky bastard who gets to love you forever.”

I kissed him and got lost in his warmth and his love, feeling so very grateful.
