Chapter 1 - Vadik

Standing by my office window, I stared at the fields outside. Listening to my brothers discussing our next project, my mind was elsewhere. Turning to face them, I forcefully slammed my fist down on my table. The room filled with silence as they stared blankly at me.

I could hear my anger coming through as I spoke. “I’ve had enough of this. It is time! We’ve given her more than enough space.”

My brothers mumbled under their breaths. They knew we had to get Nadia back. Yet, all attempts at contacting her have failed. She was ignoring us. Nadia stayed close to Abram, her new husband, and one of the Dubow men.

It was infuriating that guards surrounded her whenever he wasn’t around. For months now, we have followed her. Hell, we were stalking her, trying to reconcile with her. But we found no opening to do so.

After everything that had gone down, we backed off. But we needed to make up for all we had put her through. We had to fix the family bond. Surely her bratva husband knew what family meant. Yet, he took her side. I’ve had enough, this had to change now!

“Well?” I spat at my brothers. “What have you found out? What are our next steps in getting through to Nadia?” I had to fix this. I had ruined all their lives, and it was time to step up. But I couldn’t do it alone. I need my brothers.

Makari cleared his throat glancing at Pavel. “I’ve heard a little birdy whispering through the grapevines,” he started saying then stopped.

“Yes?” I asked impatiently. “What did you hear?”

“Well,” he stated after standing and coming towards me. “You remember the young woman we saw with Nadia. I think her name is Tasha.”

“Yes, yes, Abram’s sister. Get on with it. Spit it out, man!” I rushed him.

“I heard her protection detail was being removed as everything has quieted down,” he replied.

Considering what he just told me. I wondered how this could be useful. I know Nadia has taken a liking to her but how could we use this to our advantage?

“Maybe we can kidnap her and hold her for ransom?” Pavel added his voice as he rose from the table.

I grinned at him as he came around the table joining us at the window. “Excellent idea,” I said tapping his shoulder. “Now that’s the way a brain should be working.”

Pavel’s face lit up like a Christmas tree. He was beaming as he pushed in between us. The three of us stood staring out the window in silence. I was trying to figure out how we could get to her.

Turning to my brothers, I spoke in a low tone. “I know we have her apartment address somewhere. Would we be able to take her from there?”

Makari kept facing the window as he responded. I could hear a hint of defeat in his tone. “I don’t think that would work. I’ve had some guys sitting on their homes.” He turned and looked at me as he continued. “There has been no movement for quite some time.”

Stepping back, he sighed deeply as he spoke again. “On top of that, we don’t know if or when she will return there. Theircompany has many properties. Who knows where she could be staying.”

I watched as he walked to the table and sat down. “We must look harder; we must find her!” I spat frustrated.

Pavel spoke so loud and excitedly next to me, that I almost shoved him away. “I just remembered.” Glancing from me to Makari, his eyes appeared to sparkle.

“Come on then,” I huffed. “Spit it out, boy!”

“When I went to that tech store on the main street to have my phone fixed, I heard something.”

I was about to grab him and shake it out of him, but Makari beat me to it.

“What?” Makari questioned as he rose from the table. “Don’t keep us in suspense. What did you hear?”

Pavel grinned, rolling his eyes at us before speaking. “Well, as I was waiting, the old man came out of the back. He took a package from behind the counter and started walking back when the boy asked him where he was taking Tasha’s order. I don’t know if it is her but could be.”

A sudden rush of joy pushed up in me. I wanted to embrace Pavel. Clearing my throat instead, I spoke confidently. “That is worth looking into.”

Moving to the fridge, I grabbed a pen and paper from the cupboard next to it. “Right,” I added as I sat down. “One of you go get us some food and the other one can pop into the bottle store. I will start the planning.”

The two glanced at each other before Makari spoke. “Wouldn’t it be better if we did the planning together as always?”

“No, no, don’t worry. This is a simple plan. I will get started and once you return, you can help me finalize it, okay?” I replied looking back at them.
