Evan glanced at Brett, who had a small smile on his face but didn’t contradict Felix’s words. “Okay. I’ll do that. Thanks.”
He headed to Randall’s office, getting a smile from Nick, another guard, who sat outside.
“Dominic is inside, but hopefully, they’re decent,” he joked.
“Wouldn’t be the first time I’ve seen more than I should, though I always hope never to again.”
Nick laughed and waved him in. “Good luck.”
Evan knocked and entered, finding Dominic in his proper seat, by the king’s office door, and Randall behind his desk. Neither looked flushed nor embarrassed, so he hoped he’d caught them on a good day.
“Hey, what are you doing here?” Dominic asked, standing for a hug.
Evan exhaled. “I’m doing something stupid but need to wait an hour before I get the results.”
Dominic raised his eyebrows, waiting for more explanation, but Randall bustled in. “What do you need from us?”
Evan shrugged. “I was told you might have something for me to do to wile away the time?”
Randall beamed. “Oh wow! Yes. I’m sure I have something you can do.” He looked around. “How are you with data entry?”
Evan chuckled. “I get by.”
“Awesome. Have a seat, and I’ll get you working.”
Evan could see Dominic angling for more information, but until he had some himself, he didn’t want to say anything. He spent the time entering events and tasks into the calendar for Randall, something Evan knew Randall could do himself, in probably half the time, but he was grateful for the distraction. When Felix called to say they’d finished, he almost raced back to the security room. Thankfully, after saying thank you to Randall.
Felix opened the door for him again, and Evan sat down. “Did you find anything?”
“Yes and no,” Felix said. “There were definitely fingerprints on all of them, and they matched, but we didn’t get a match on our database.”
Evan frowned. “What did they match with them?”
“Each other. So the prints on note one matched with the print on note two and the calendar. Which means they all came from the same person.”
“But a person we can’t identify?”
Felix nodded. “Correct.”
Evan sighed. “I don’t know if that helps me or not.”
Felix gave a small smile. “I do have some other things I’m going to check, but I can’t guarantee results from that either. But I’ll let you know if I do. In the meantime, I wouldn’t worry too much. I bet it’s just someone interested in him. You never know, they might end up together.”
“Over my dead body,” Evan growled.
“Felix, Felix, Felix. Don’t you know anything?” Brett said. “Did you both finally get your heads out of your asses and reconcile?”
Evan stared at him, mouth wide, though Brett didn’t look at him. “Um, kind of. Yes.”
“Good. Maybe he’ll stop wandering around the place like a kicked puppy.”
“How did I miss that?” Felix asked.
“Because you weren’t looking,” Brett said. “I see everything.”
Felix nodded, and Evan chuckled. “On that note, I’ll say goodbye. Sorry to waste your time.”
Brett and Felix both waved him away, and Evan chuckled again at their joint actions. He headed home, bracing himself for questions when Owen returned.
