My stomach bottoms out as I look at my brother.
Here we go…
“Uh, yeah.”
“I’ll leave you to it.” Zara gets to her feet. “Oh, and Danil?”
“Yeah?” I try to keep my expression neutral as I look at my sister-in-law, but Zara only smiles at me.
“It’s good to see that you and Emily have made up.”
We made up, all right.
“What’s up?” I ask Dimitri as I take a seat in the armchair adjacent to the couch.
I try to read his expression, but my brother looks relaxed, and that’s nothing out of the ordinary for Dimitri.
For all I know, I’m about to get kicked out of the bratva for defiling his wife’s sister.
“Rurik ran the plates of that car that was following you the other day.”
I fight the urge to sigh with relief.
“The car was stolen, but we managed to link it back to Igor.” Dimitri leans forward and rests his forearms on his knees as he looks out of the floor-to-ceiling windows.
“So, we have no idea who was driving?”
“Mikhail has Rosa searching through CCTV footage from along the route it took, but so far, she’s coming up empty.”
“Shit.” I lean back in my chair.
A heavyweight settles in my stomach as I realize what this means. “So, Igor definitely had someone tailing Emily.”
“Yes. And it’s likely he still does.”
“Fuck’s sake. He’s fucking relentless.”
“You sound surprised.”
I rake my fingers through my hair as I try not to panic. “I just… We need to take care of this, Dimitri.”
“Everyone is working around the clock, Danil. He’s not going to win. Though it means you need to be even more vigilant about keeping an eye on Emily.”
“I’m starting to see where Alexei was coming from when he locked Bianca in the Forest Hills house,” I mutter under my breath, and Dimitri laughs.
“Please let me be in the room when you suggest that idea to Emily.”
I shoot my brother a glare.
I know he’s only keeping his tone light because he can tell I’m beginning to spiral, but it’s doing little to help. The only thing that will make me feel better at this point is putting a bullet between Igor Ivanov’s eyes.
“We’re all going for dinner tomorrow night with Zara and Emily’s parents. And I think it would be a good idea if you came too, just in case.”
“You want me to crash your family dinner?”
“Just for extra backup, in case something happens.”
From the look on Dimitri’s face, it seems I don’t have a choice.
