Kade took it and set it on the bench next to him. “Have you seen anyone around the house or town who doesn’t belong?”

Tristan shook his head. “No, but we’re keeping an eye out. Katie said two strangers had breakfast at the Kitchen yesterday morning. She said it looked like they were arguing, but whenever she approached the table, they stopped talking.”

“You doing okay?” Skylar asked Harper.

“As good as I can be considering. I just want this over with.”

“Understandable,” Tristan said. “What’s the plan, brother? I know you have one.”

“I’m going to use Harper’s laptop to bring them to me.”

“To us,” Tristan said.

“No. I’m not involving you and Skylar.” He glanced at his future sister-in-law. “I won’t risk my family.”

“You need to let the police handle this,” his brother said.

“No offense, but your cops and deputies don’t have the skills I do. We don’t know who these people are, how many there are, how connected they are, or what kind of weapons they’ll bring to the party.”

“I don’t like it. We’re not leaving you unprotected.”

“I won’t be. I’m bringing in a team, the kind that knows how to fight dirty then disappear. We’ll have weapons your people can only dream about.” There could be only two coming for Harper, or there could be twenty. Because he didn’t know who they were dealing with, he didn’t know what kind of resources they had. He’d rather err on the side of overkill by bringing in a team than be sorry he hadn’t.

“I still don’t like it.”

“Same,” Skylar said. “We’re not Barney Fife, Kade.”

“Never thought you were, but this is the way it’s going to be. Besides, the cabin is out of your jurisdiction, Tristan, and out of your county, Skylar. You’d have to involve Sheriff Lamorne, and you really want to do that?” He chuckled at the expression of horror on her face. “Yeah, not a good idea.” The man was full of himself without the skills to back up his attitude. Kade would take Barney Fife any day over Lamorne.

“What I want from you two is to be our eyes when these people start arriving.” He turned to Harper. “When the time comes, I want you to take the boat to the other side of the lake, where Tristan will have one of his cops pick you up.”

“No.” She narrowed her eyes. “This was my doing, and I’m not hiding from these bastards.”

He knew she’d say that, but it was worth a try. He was the planner in his Delta Force team, and he always had plans A, B, C, and D, so plan B it was. “Then you’re our sniper.” She was as good a shot as him, even with a long gun, and in the sniper role he could stash her in a hidey hole.

“You’re not going to try to talk me out of being involved?”

“Would it do any good? Because if so, I’ll give it a try.”

“No, but I thought I’d have to throw a tantrum.”

“I can think of better ways to get your way.” At the sound of a chuckle, he glanced at his brother and Skylar, both looking at them with amusement. “What?”

His brother opened his mouth to say something, but when Skylar elbowed him, he snapped it shut.

Kade scowled. He probably didn’t want to hear whatever it was, anyway. “Back to the plan. Once Harper logs into her laptop, our bad guys will be able to pinpoint our location. I’ll call when she does so both of you and your cops and deputies can watch for them to head my way and give me updates. I’ll also want you to mess with them a little. Pull them over for going too fast or too slow, anything you can think of. That’ll throw them off their game a little.”

Tristan frowned. “You’re bringing them to the cabin?”

“I know this area inside and out and have cameras all over the place, so I can track them when they look for us.”

Kade’s phone buzzed, Parker’s name coming up on the screen. “What’s up, baby brother?” He frowned at what Parker was telling him. “Hold up. I’m with Tris and Skylar. Let me put you on speaker. Okay, start over.”

“Two US Marshals just left. They’re looking for Harper as a person of interest in a murder.”

“What?” Harper shrieked. “I didn’t murder anyone.”

“I told them that. I also told them that you’d been here for a short visit but had left a few days ago, and I didn’t know where you were going from here. Don’t think they believed me, but there wasn’t much they could do.”
