“Kade?” Nick asked.

“You got me. I’m with Harper. Okay if I put the call on speaker?”

“This concerns her, so definitely,” Nick replied.

“On speaker.” Kade held his phone toward Harper. “Say hi to Nick Talon.”

“Um, hello, Nick.”

“Harper. Got some bad news for you. Someone who knows their stuff embedded Wi-Fi tracking in your laptop.”

“Oh my God. How?”

“Pretty simple, actually. It happened when you clicked on the link in Detective Johnson’s email.”

“Why would a detective do that?”

“Because he’s a fake identity. There is no such person.”

“How can that be? I sent an email to the police department, and he responded.”

“Someone responded, so the odds are good that it was a cop, but he doesn’t want you to know who he actually is. Every time you turn on your laptop, he can track your location.”

“That answers the question of how they knew she was at my house,” Kade said. Harper was looking a little green, and he put his hand over hers and squeezed.

“Whoever it is, they’re good, but I’m better. It’s going to take me a little time to trace the link back, but I will.”

“Since you’ve had her laptop on, do they think she’s at your location?” Kade asked.

Nick snorted. “Didn’t I just tell you I was good? They don’t know I’ve had it on. Chase said you believe there’s more than one person involved. Here’s what I think. We at least have a bad cop who got lucky and managed to get her email before someone else and then we have a competent hacker. Once we trace the link, do we go after them?”

Kade thought for a moment. “Depending on what you find out, that could mean having to infiltrate multiple locations to weed them out in areas we don’t have law enforcement connections like we do here. I would rather be able to control the location, one where there won’t be innocents who could get caught in the cross fire. So, we can use her laptop to set a trap at our chosen time and place. How long before you think you can trace the link to these people?”

“Depending on how good our hacker is, a day, two at the most.”

“That’s good. It’ll give me time to plan. Don’t take the tracker off. When you’re finished, send Harper’s laptop back to my brother.”

“Will do. Any other questions?”

“Have they been able to see me when I turn on my laptop?” Harper said.

“No. They don’t have eyes.”

“Well, that’s something anyway. That would be really creepy. Not like I’m not already creeped out.”

“Understandable.”

“Any way of determining who the cop is?” Kade asked.

“Unless our hacker is emailing him or her, no. My guess is they aren’t because they’re smart enough not to put anything on record. If you don’t have anything else, Chase wants to talk to you.”

“Thanks, Nick. Harper and I really appreciate you taking the time to help.”

“No thanks necessary. Nothing I hate more than men who think it’s their right to hurt a woman. We’re going to find these people, Harper, and they’re going to wish they’d stayed under the rock they crawled out from under. That’s my promise to you.”

“That means a lot, Nick,” Harper said. “When this is over, I’ll treat you and Chase to a steak-and-lobster dinner.”

“It’s a date. Here’s Chase.”
