Wait, what? She panned the grim expressions among the Conclave.

“I should’ve killed the Jurou Biljana commander when I had a chance!” Aculus growled.

“You’re talking about the reptiles that hurt my sister.” Nadzia frowned. Those bastards seemed to be at the center of a lot of nefarious shit.

“The very same. Jyk,” Aculus grit his teeth.

“And you knew they were planning to kill you!?” she demanded, looking from Aculus to Tellar.

Aculus and Tellar both nodded, anger dancing in their red eyes. Her mouth gaped in shock.

No wonder Aculus didn’t look shocked.

“You and I are going to discuss this later,” she informed the man.

“Of course, my weakness,” he swiftly replied.

Tellar along with several of the matrons repressed a chuckle at Aculus’ automatic response, and she had a feeling he’d learned the phrase from his father. This wasn’t the time for jokes and yet it helped ease the tension.

“Don’t encourage him,” Axilla huffed.

And the tension’s back.

“Sheismy weakness.” Aculus stared down his mother. “And that vasta Jurou Biljana is going to regret threatening her. If Jyk wants a fight, he’s got one.” He slammed his fist on the table.

Aculus’ vehemence was frightening. That was saying something considering she’d been around blustering military men her whole life. He wasn’t the least bit concerned someone wanted to kill him, only that she was in danger. If he’d shrunk from the situation, she wouldn’t have blamed him. Self-preservation was the normal, smart response. But he didn’t fear danger. If anything, he seemed to thrive on it. Add that to his rabid response in her defense, and she was reminded of how incredibly sexy he was.

This is so not the place for that. The desire to get him alone fled, as another detail popped to mind.

“Place!” she blurted out.

The Conclave looked at her funny.

“They’re going to try again. They won’t try to abduct you and take you to Jyk, since that didn’t work. They said the next opportunity would be in public,” she quickly relayed.

“They want to make an example of you. That’s how the Jurou Biljana will get their revenge,” Axilla declared.

“The Trials! That’s where they’ll make their attempt.” Tellar slapped the table.

“Then it’s a good thing there won’t be another Trial,” Aculus said.

“Agreed.” She nodded. Despite his bravado she wanted to hide out in his bedroom until these assholes were captured.

“Wrong. Weakness or not, the human has yet to prove herself worthy of the Premiere Servant,” Axilla insisted and several of the Conclave nodded in agreement.

“Well, Nadzia isn’t mating the Premiere Servant,” Aculus snapped as he stood. “She’s mating me.” He practically growled in Axilla’s face as he reminded his mother he’d denounced his position and conclave.

“Mind your tongue!” Tellar snapped at Aculus.

“Come, Nadzia, I’m going to grab a few of our things then we’re leaving.” He held out his hand.

“I’ll join you. Just give me a moment,” she replied.

Aculus’ brow furrowed as he looked to her for confirmation. She smiled, assuring him she’d be all right and he nodded back.

“This is nonsense. You can’t leave now. We’re not done discussing this,” Axilla insisted vehemently but Aculus ignored her and left the room. “Do you believe this? Go get him,” the woman said to Tellar then turned to her. “Thisisyourfault.”

Tellar stood to follow Aculus.
