“A few days at least,” Bae answers. “Maybe a week. It depends on what we find. I’d rather you don’t go back, though. Could you handle it if you book something now and go straight there?”

Jenks’s hand in mine goes ice-cold, and I feel the shock trickling through him, even though he doesn’t show it.

Bailey knows something.

I don’t know if it’s my thought or Jenks’s, but the edge in Bailey’s voice makes it sound like he doesn’t want us to disturb a crime scene.

Don’t argue with him, I whisper to Jenks in my mind. He tightens his fingers on mine to show he understands.

“That’s a little inconvenient, but I understand,” Jenks says, his voice surprisingly even. “We should be able to get a room without too much difficulty, and I can’t see Alisa turning down a shopping trip to get some new clothes. What do you say, babe?”

He turns to look at me, and the hollow look in his eyes kills me, even though he’s trying to hide it with a smile.

“I think it sounds great!” I answer enthusiastically. “In fact, I can’t wait. What an adventure!”

I get up immediately, tugging on Jenks’s hand to usher him out of the room. He moves to follow me, but Bae taps the table lightly to get our attention.

“I’m glad that’s settled,” Bae says. “You guys are doing us a massive favor. Can you leave your keys for us, Jenks?”

Jenks pauses for a second, then takes out his keychain. He removes a few keys and places them on the table.

“There you go, Bae,” Jenks says. “Front and back doors. I’m assuming you want to use my house as a base?”

“Yeah,” Bae agrees. “It’s going to get pretty hectic there. I’m sorry for the inconvenience, but I really want you guys out of the danger zone. It won’t be very relaxing there, either, with patrols coming and going all the time.”

Bailey sounds genuinely apologetic, and it leaves me wondering if he does know something or if he’s straight up telling the truth.

It doesn’t matter. Get the fuck out of here in case he does know!

“Sure, Bae, I understand,” Jenks says.

I can sense a deep need in him to just open up and tell Bailey everything. Silently, I send out my support, letting him know that whatever he wants to do, I’m here for him.

After a couple of seconds of awkward silence, Jenks simply says goodbye and leaves the room. As soon as we get in the car, he pulls out his phone to book us a room.

“I hope this isn’t too inconvenient for you,” Jenks says. “I know it must feel weird to just leave without getting your stuff.”

“I don’t mind,” I say, grinning. “Especially if you’re serious about taking me shopping.”

“I sure am,” he grins. “Where do you want to stay?”

“Oh, I don’t mind. Something simple is fine.”

Jenks laughs softly. “Babe, this is a tourist town, and it has some of the fanciest inns and hotels in the state. Luckily for you, your husband is loaded, so we can stay anywhere you like.”

Excitement makes my heart lurch, and my head is suddenly full of hot tubs, French champagne, and luxury beds.

It’s not like my family was poor, but I’ve never stayed anywhere truly five-star before.

“Say no more,” Jenks states, not even seeming to realize I didn’t speak. “One five-star hotel with a deluxe suite coming up.”

I want to protest that he really shouldn’t—I’ll be happy with anything he chooses—but I can’t hide my excitement, either.

Let him spoil you. Why not enjoy the perks of marrying a rich wolf?

“Okay,” he says, putting down his phone. “All booked. They gouged me for early check-in, but I don’t care. It’s barely the daily interest on my capital.”

“I think you just slipped into a foreign language,” I laugh.
