Grace studied her phone with a seriousness Caz hadn’t seen for a while.
Smiling.
Reading.
Frowning.
Flicking the screen to move the page on to the next.
And then she sighed. “It’s so difficult.”
Caz nodded and handed her a mug of steaming, freshly brewed tea. “Yup. And I thought we weren’t going to think about it ‘til after we got home?” she said, sitting down beside her and taking the phone from her hands.
Caz glanced quickly at the screen before she clicked off the website and put the phone down onto the sofa between them. “These are donors with the clinic.”
“I was just looking.” Grace grinned. “I’m excited about it.”
“I know you are,” Caz acknowledged, placing her hand on Grace’s knee. “But…we need to enjoy our time here and staying cooped up looking at phones trying to decide whose sperm we want to buy, is not my idea of fun when the sun is shining and we have a beach within walking distance.”
“You’ve changed your mind, haven’t you?” Grace said with just the barest hint of frustration in her tone.
“No, that’s not—”
Grace sat up abruptly. “If you have, it’s best you say now.”
“Grace,” Caz said firmly, “I haven’t changed my mind. I just want to enjoy this time together like we planned, without the stress we know will inevitably come when we do sit down and make a decision about who we use…together.”
Grace sighed again, more heavily this time. “You’re right. Sorry. I just—I didn’t think it would hurt to have a quick look.”
“We’ve got two more days to just chill and relax, which is the best place you can be before entering into this and making any attempt at getting pregnant.”
“You’re right, so, what do you want to do? Beach again?”
Caz jumped up, grabbed her car keys and wallet from the table beside her. “No, it’s almost lunchtime. Let’s go into town and get something to eat and have a wander around the shops.” She smiled. “We can hit the beach this afternoon when we need to cool off with a swim.”
“Lunch sounds good.” Grace checked her watch, 11.15 a.m. By the time they drove into town it would be midday and she was definitely feeling hungry enough for some food. “There’s a—”
“The Gantry?” Caz grinned. It was Grace’s favourite fancy restaurant chain. “I know…I booked us a table.”
“You did?”
“Yeah, it’s your favourite.” Caz shrugged.
Grace kissed Caz’s blushing cheek. “You’re the only one who remembers things like that.”
Taking her hand, Caz twirled Grace around. “Then that…is a travesty.”
Her spin coming to a stop, Grace fell against Caz, laughing until she looked up and into Caz’s eyes. “I like it. You see me. You’ve always seen me.”
“Hard to miss, to be fair.”
Grace’s eyes narrowed. “Are you comparing me to a pig again?” She smiled at her own joke, her palms settling warmly against Caz’s chest.
“Nope…more like a peacock…in all its glory.”
“Nice save.” Grace grinned. Her palms patted gently before she took a breath and stepped away. “Shall we go?”
Caz did a roll of her hand, bowing as she said, “After you, M’Lady.”
