“I’m glad I never spent my savings on her,” Felicity bit out. Her words were harsh, unlike her usual tone.
“It’s over now.” I gently pointed out. “Don’t let the hurt fester into hate.” Not only did I sound old and beyond wise to my ears, but Felicity’s eye roll told me that she also found me insufferable. “They can’t hurt you anymore. Focus on doing the right thing for yourself and grow. Thrive without them interfering.” I went to her and wrapped my arms around her, holding her tight. She didn’t push me away. “So tell me about this ex of yours. Did he make you scream his name at night?” I wasn’t sure I wanted the answer to that, but I asked anyways.
Her indignant snort was exactly what I had been hoping for. Her reply, however, was completely unexpected. “We waited for our wedding night, of which he was too drunk to perform. I never got the chance to scream his name because we separated quickly after he sobered up and found out I was broke.” Then her wicked mouth taunted me by adding, “For the record, I would have—and loudly.”
“Lucky for me the bastard is out of the picture.” Nipping at her ear, I whispered, “You’re welcome, by the way.”
“For what?” Felicity pulled back and looked at me. “How did you know Toby passed?”
“Maybe I looked into you?” I inhaled her heavenly scent and answered her first question, “You’re welcome, because I rocked your world back then.”
Her laughter was exactly what I was after. Pride filled my heart. I felt pretty good about my hand, so I raised the stakes. Taking a gamble, I asked, “Do you want to be alone tonight?”
