“Oh, shut up.” But Nikki was laughing at me. “You are going to learn everything I know. The money I just paid will be something your numerically inclined brain will be able to make me back in no time flat. I just have to show you a few tips and tricks. Then you’ll make your own fortune. But, Loretta?”
“Yes?”
“You have to figure out how to live with Duke. This equality bullshit and looking at everything from such a technical vantage point will only keep getting you into trouble.”
I hung my head. She was right. Of course, she was right. I had come back and tried to fix everything, but I was still judging relationships, friendships, and lifestyles from a place of lack and plenty.
“You have to let him help you, Loretta,” Nikki spelt it out, her voice softening.
“I can learn to do that,” I finally murmured. “I love him—he loves me. We can get through this.”
“Good, now I’m going to drop you at your home. You’ll need to work with Duke on setting up a temporary office to get the business running.” Nikki looked over and gave me a saucy wink. “I am still on vacation. So everything is in y’all’s hands. Don’t fuck it up.”
