He ached for her. He knew what she was feeling, that bone-shattering helplessness. The dread of watching something unfold in real time and being completely powerless to stop it.

“Honor, look at me.”

The force in his tone made her rip her stare from the screen and shift to him. The pain in her eyes, the hollow terror he read there, made his gut lurch.

“If he wanted to kill her, he would have done it already.” His voice was low but firm. “He has other plans. Call him.”

Her eyes flared in surprise. “Call my ex?”

“Yes. I’m right here. It’s going to be okay.”

She responded with a jerky nod and held up her phone again. Her hands shook badly as she located the contact and pressed the button to call Sully.

She hit speaker, and the line rang.

Once. Twice.

Then a click sounded, followed by a man’s voice that made Gray’s fist clench with fury.

“I didn’t want it to come to this, Honor,” her ex said in an eerily calm voice, as if they were discussing the weather.

She gripped the phone like it was the only thing tethering her to the earth. “Where is she? What are you doing with Felicity? Bring her back.Please.”

The desperation in her voice shattered Gray’s heart.

A sigh echoed on the line. “I tried to avoid this. But you left me no choice.”

“What? How didIleave you no choice?” Panic cracked through her tone.

“You take your whole damn craft setup with you everywhere.”

Gray’s brows furrowed. What did that mean?

Honor was just as confused. “What does that have to do with anything?”

“You don’t get it, do you?” Sully issued a humorless chuckle. “I need my diamonds.”

Gray’s gut cramped.

“Sully, are you on drugs? What the hell are you talking about?”

Gray swung his gaze to the ring she had made him on the hand gripping the wheel. The smooth wirework. The stone in the center.

“Fuck,” he groaned out. “He hid diamonds in your bead collection.”

Honor’s breath stalled. “What?”

“Your new boyfriend’s already got everything figured out.”

Gray held up his hand for Honor to look at the ring.

She grabbed his hand and pulled off the ring to examine it.

“Your boyfriend sounds smart. Just keep being smart and you can get your sister back.”

Honor’s head snapped up and she stared out the windshield at the dark streamer of road they were on, but Gray knew she wasn’t really seeing her surroundings at all.

She was seeing her sister, scared or possibly hurt.
