“Human female!” came a deep voice from behind me. “Halt!”

Halt? The hell I would.

I took off running down the snow-covered road.

Chapter 6

GORRAN

As I chasedthe errant female, I realized her scent was slightly different today, and it took me a few moments to understand why—she wasovulating.

I growled with pleasure.

My scrotum tightened and my cock hardened at the prospect of bedding the golden-haired beauty and planting my seed in her womb.

“Halt!” I called again, though she showed no signs of slowing. She was running so fast downhill that I feared she might slip and hurt herself.

I quickened my pace, the thought of any harm coming to her leaving me deeply unsettled. The urge to protect her always resounded in my psyche, as steady and sure as my rapidly beating heart.

Finally, I reached the human female. I swept her into my arms and paused on the road as she thrashed in my hold.

“Settle down. I promise I won’t hurt you.”

Large blue eyes peered up at me. Her face was flushed, and she was breathing hard. Her golden hair was tucked underneath a black hat, and she wore several layers of clothing. Gloves, too.

When I’d returned to the cabin, intending to knock and introduce myself—as Brutus had suggested—she’d been missing. I’d followed her trail down the snow-dusted road, shocked to discover she’d ventured farther from the cabin than ever before. She’d traveled beyond the markers I’d created for her safety.

“Let me go!” She’d paused struggling briefly to stare up at me, but she now resumed her fight, kicking and pushing at my chest in a valiant effort to free herself from my arms. Given how small she was, her strength surprised me, as well as the curse words that tumbled from her lips. Montikaan females rarely used foul language.

“Please settle down, human.”

To my relief, she stilled and grew quiet. The waves of fear that radiated off her bothered me, but I supposed it couldn’t be helped. Not only were we strangers, but until today, she’d likely been unaware of the existence of my people, as most humans were.

“Let me go.Please,” she whispered in a trembling voice.

I breathed deep of her enticing scent, filling my lungs with the sweetness of her fertility. To discover she was ovulating on the same day I’d decided to reveal myself to her… surely it was a sign from the Great Spirit that we were fated to become lifemates.

A sign that it was time for me to move on from the darkness in my past, that I wasn’t forsaking the memory of Sashona by taking this particular human female.

I couldn’t deny that I feltcalledto the golden-haired beauty. As I stared into her bottomless blue gaze, I experienced a shifting in my soul, a deepknowingthat filled me with awe.

Her lips parted on a slight gasp and her eyes widened further, as though she felt it too. I prayed she felt it too.

“I am sorry if I have frightened you, pretty human. You have nothing to fear from me—I give you my word that I will never hurt you. In fact, I would maim and slaughter anyone who tries to harm you.”

Shock rolled off her, as well as a growing sense of curiosity. To my great relief, the waves of fear weren’t as strong as moments ago.

But there was something else—another emotion brimming in her heart that was more intense than her shock, curiosity, and lingering fear.

Longing.

It was a mirror to thecallI was experiencing to make her mine.

How extraordinary.

I almost reeled back in surprise.

“You feel it too.” I searched her gaze. “The pull between us. Thecalling.”
