“I’ll have to find some more.”

“Make it fast, Chief or we won’t have very many followers to question.” Not at the rate the woman killed. “With me and Harper having to wait for first responders at each place, we can’t catch up to her.”

“I’m getting helicopters in the air. We’ll get her.”

Robert listened to the man on the other end of the line blather on about the police arresting them all. He whirled as Lucy barged into the house. He narrowed his eyes at the sight of her wearing skintight leather. “You look like a cat burglar.” He returned his attention to the phone.

“Run. Do not let them catch you. If they do, and you’re released, you know the consequences.” His world was rapidly dissolving. What kind of a leader would he be without followers? He’d have to start all over once the agent and detective were disposed of.

“I’ve been busy. I’m hitting the shower. I’ll fill you in when I’m done.”

Robert barely listened. His mind whirled. “Call the others and get out of town. Leave your family behind if you have to. They’re safer without you.” His blood chilled as the man continued to talk.

“They’re already dying! Someone is going around locking people in their garages with the car running. Where am I supposed to go?”

“The church. Tell the others. There is food and water for weeks.” He hung up and barged into the bathroom.

The room felt like a sauna from the hot water. Robert’s hands curled into fists. He should’ve brought a gun or a knife. He could end the woman’s disobedience right here.

She shoved aside the curtain, mindless of her nudity, and smiled. “You told me to make things hard on them. Don’t be upset because it’s not the way you would have done things.” She reached on a shelf above the shower and removed a gun. “If you approach, I will shoot you. I can always get another job.”

“Stop making decisions without me. You’re killing my people.” He stepped back, his gaze on the barrel of the gun.

“If they were taken to the police station and interrogated, you’d have me kill them anyway.” She pulled the curtain closed again. “Go away and let me shower in peace.”

One of these days, Robert would stand over her dead body and laugh.

Chapter Five

Robert sat gluedto the television set as a camera recorded six of his followers and their wives being ushered into the police station. Six. All that was left after Lucy took matters into her own hands. Hopefully, a couple had managed to escape. There was no mention of any deaths. “From now on, terrorize the agent and detective without killing off my people. Or anyone I don’t tell you to. Not everyone deserves to die.”

“Of course, they do. Even us.” She handed him a box of takeout Chinese. “Haven’t you ever been to church? Heard the Bible stories?”

“Don’t tell me you believe the fantasies.” He dug into his chow mein, desperately wishing for a fine dining experience again.

“I didn’t say that.” She refused to elaborate further.

Let her keep her silly thoughts to herself. As long as she obeyed him, carried out his will until he was done with her, he’d put up with her moods.

He returned his attention back to the television. Questioning his people would most likely take all day. Then, he had some serious decisions to make. Did it really matter at this point whether his people talk? No one knew where he was. No, it wouldn’t solve anything to have Lucy kill them for talking.

“Why don’t you stop sulking and tell me what you would like my next move to be?” Using chopsticks, Lucy lifted noodles to her mouth.

He thought for a minute, his hand holding chopsticks halting halfway to his mouth. What did he want her to do? He was supposed to be ridding the world of people committing the sin of gluttony, but here he sat, feeling worthless and bored.

“I need to go hunting.”

“Sounds like a marvelous plan.”

Stupid man. Lucy tossed her empty container in the garbage. Would he ever realize one man couldn’t rid the world of sin? She shrugged. As long as he thought so, he’d continue to need her services. Her bank account continued to grow. Soon, she’d have more than enough money to retire in Europe in style.

Maybe she’d get married, start a family. Raise the next generation of assassins. She smiled and grabbed the bag to carry outside.

“Hello.”
