“Most likely. It’s just a theory, though.”
“Makes sense to me.” She turned to where the firemen gained entrance to what was left of the garage. It didn’t appear as if a car had been inside. Hopefully, Liam was right, and Reynold had been taken away. A glimmer of hope grew.
Macey and Harris stopped behind her jeep. “Anyone inside?” Macey asked, hurrying toward them.
“No.” Harper shook her head. “We don’t know about the basement yet.”
“So, they got away again.” He sighed.
Liam explained his theory about the trackers. “I want to get new phones, but that would prevent Robert from being able to contact us. I’m not ready to end the texts. They’re the only lead we have.”
As much as she hated the idea of being tracked, Harper agreed with him. They couldn’t sever the only contact they had with Robert.
A fireman shoveled hot ashes and debris aside until he revealed the gaping hole leading to the basement. “Doesn’t look as if anyone is down there.”
The tension fell from Harper’s shoulders.

“We’re back.” Liam showed Harper the screen of his phone. “Looks like a cabin.”
Reynold had been shackled at the ankle to the pipe of a wood stove. No gag, so they were somewhere noise didn’t matter. Misty Mountain?
“If they’re on the mountain, it’ll take a year to find them.” Harper glanced at the mountain rising in the distance. “There are a lot of secluded cabins up there. Some of the people shoot first and ask questions later.
“We’ll get a copter in the air. Maybe someone will spot the Mercedes.” Macey stepped away, putting his phone to his ear.
Nothing was that easy. Liam leaned against the car. “We can head back to the office and go through what I found in Lucy’s drawer.”
“Okay. At least until we receive the next part of the game.” Harper got in the jeep, her gaze remaining on her phone. “We’ll never stop them. They always know where we are, and we can’t do anything about it.”
“I’m working on that.” He drove back to the office.
He did have an idea formulating in his mind, but it would be risky. “We could get the new phones for when we’re heading somewhere we don’t want them to know. That will put us in the dark for a while in regard to Robert. We won’t know what he’s doing.” He cut her a sideways glance.
“Do we have a choice?”
“We always have a choice.”
“I think we should get the new phones. They might be our only chance, albeit slim, to catching Robert and Lucy.”
“Agree.” He pulled in front of the station and headed to his desk.
He pulled several pages from each envelope. “Wow. We have everything we need to lock Lucy up for years if we can prove these belong to her.”
Harper leaned over his desk. “What are they?”
“Lists of hits, the amount of money made, bank account numbers, aliases…everything but her real name. There’s even passports.” Thank you, God. The passports prove all the information in front of him pertained to the same woman. Once caught, she’d spend the rest of her life behind bars.
“Any Lucy?”
“No.”
He opened each passport. Some revealed a pretty woman, others a dowdy middle-aged, all with different disguises and names. “She’s been everywhere.”
“She’s also got more money than she can spend in a lifetime.” Harper sat back in her chair. “Why hasn’t she gone overseas where US law enforcement wouldn’t reach?”
“She’s involved with whatever Robert thinks he’s doing. I doubt she has the same beliefs. Maybe she doesn’t like to leave a job unfinished.” He shrugged. “This is the biggest thing we’ve found so far after learning Robert’s true identity.”
