Callie wrapped her fingers around the blade, her fear ratcheting up a thousand notches. “What the hell is going on, Zar?”

He shook his head and pulled her in for a tight hug. “I will send Flare to you, little dove,” he murmured. “He will protect you with his life. No one other than Flare, Callie. Do you understand?”

She nodded. “You’re scaring me.”

He cupped her chin in his palm and leaned down to place his lips against hers. Callie barely tasted him before he pulled back. “You will not leave me, Callie,” he ground out. “I will be unable to control my creature if I come back to find you gone.”

She didn’t know why she kept doing it, but Callie placed her palm over his heart and tried to ease his fears. “You promised to take me to the festival, Zar and I’m holding you to it.”

He nodded, a muscle in his jaw jumping wildly. A dead giveaway to Zar’s agitation. His wings moved around her in that familiar cage of warmth and security that Callie was fast becoming addicted to. “I’ll be back as soon as I can, my ofelia. Stay close to Flare. I trust him with my life.”

His life? Seriously? She wanted answers, but Zar quickly stepped away from her and within seconds he and Kade were gone. Callie was left holding a dagger and wishing like hell she could go back to when she’d woken in Zar’s arms. Cozy and safe. “Crap.”
