He groaned and his hips lifted, his cock beginning to plump.

“It appears the dimmer is working too.” I gave a gentle stroke and bit down on the curve of his shoulder. “An excellent sign.”

“Oh, excuse me. Sorry.” The same nurse stood in the doorway, wearing a smirk.

I slid off the bed and whipped my hand from under the sheet as Reuben choked back a laugh.

“I can always come back later.” She made no move to leave.

“It’s fine, Roberta.” Reuben waved her in, looking guilty as sin. “Cam was just testing my... reflexes.”

“Oh.” She wandered to the bed and wrapped a blood pressure cuff around Reuben’s arm. “That must be some new-fangled technique from the ER that us lowly ward nurses have yet to be shown. You’ll have to give me the salient points.” She threw me a shit-eating grin and I noted the name on her badge. She’d fit in well in the ER.

I tapped the side of my nose. “Very top secret. But for the record, his reflexes are excellent.”

She snorted. “I’ll make sure to note that downandto pass on the details at shift changeover.”

I narrowed my gaze. Oh yeah, definitely ER material. “You do that. I have a rep to maintain and that should do the trick nicely. And if you think you might like a change in work environment, come see me for a transfer.”

Her eyes blew wide. “Really?”

“Really. Now hurry up. Reuben has a whole list of reflexes that need my particular attention.”

She laughed and finished her work quickly, but Reuben grabbed her hand before she left. “Do you still have your phone?”

She nodded, pulling it out of her pocket.

“Let Cam hear.”

I frowned but Reuben just patted my hand. “You’ll see.”

And as I listened to the conversation between Reuben and his father, my eyes blew wide. “Holy shit, Rube. This is fucking gold.” I didn’t give a shit about the threats the jerk made about me; it couldn’t have been better for getting him tied up over a barrel. It was absolutely perfect.

“Send it to Cam’s phone and mine, if Cam has it?” Reuben looked my way and I nodded. He relaxed. “Good. But don’t delete it until we talk to Cam’s sister. Thanks, Roberta.”

She smiled and closed the door behind her when she left.

I crawled back onto Reuben’s bed. “Damn, Rube, that was fucking brilliant.”

I waggled my brows. “Not bad for someone you thought needed protection, huh?”

My cheeks grew warm. “I’m so sorry.”

“It’s okay... now.” His mouth quirked. “And to be honest, I should’ve done that or something like it a long time ago, and that’s on me. To some extent the old bastard was right. Iwasbeing careful about the PR. I didn’t want to ruffle any feathers, but it meant leaving you and Cory way too exposed. You should’ve been my first priority, and I’m so sorry for that. But this is the new me, right. Stepping up when I should.”

He slipped an arm across my waist, his fingers dipping beneath the waistband of my jeans and searching for my crease. “So, about this wedding on Saturday...”

I hastily undid the buttons of my fly and his touch burned lines across my thirsty skin.

“I was thinking we’re both going to be pretty busy over the next few days with hospital appointments and rounds and stuff, and I want you part of all that.” He gave me a pointed look.

“Don’t worry, I’ll be here,” I promised.

“Good.” He withdrew his hand and offered it to me. I sucked his fingers into my mouth and slicked them up. He returned them to my crease and my eyelids fluttered closed. “Plus, I want us to talk to Stella and her parents and see if they’re still happy to go ahead, if you agree?”

My heart kicked up a notch and my eyes flew open again. “Yes, absolutely. Jesus, Reuben—” I lifted my head to check the door, but we were fine. “If this is you stepping up for what you want, I am so fucking on board. We should’ve had that conversation a long time ago.”

He grinned, holding my gaze. “I want.”
