Before Jack could speak, Sara took the bull by the horns.

“I’m not coming back. I’m almost thirty years old and you can’t control me.”

The corner of Jack’s mouth quirked as if he knew a joke that was on her.

“I know about Shane. He’ll just need to get a student loan.” She tipped her chin, staring Jack right in the eyes.

“You think you have it all figured out?” Jack murmured with that damned smirk.

When Levi stepped up and linked his fingers with hers, Jack’s gaze zeroed in on their hands before her father lifted his cold brown eyes to her.

“You think you know the man at your side?”

“Yes,” she hissed.

But she couldn’t help the doubts that suddenly crept in.

Her track record was shit and she hadn’t known Levi all that long.

“Then ask him why he’s here,” Jack said.

“My friends asked him to find me.”

A knot formed in her throat when she glanced at Levi.

Something in his expression had her doubting him and she pulled her hand free.

“Right?” she asked Levi, her voice had a wobble, but she couldn’t help that at the moment.

“Ask him who hired him to find you.” Jack’s smirk grew.

“Did he hire you to find me?” The words came out hoarse and unlike her normal voice.

“Yes,” Levi said and a muscle ticked in his jaw.

“So essentially, whatever you think this is, it’s not. Levi Huxley works for me,” Jack told her.

It was weird, really, how the white noise went from a fuzzy sound to suddenly pounding in her ears.

Levi was saying something, but she didn’t hear a word.

The warehouse was whirling and Levi caught her to keep her from falling.

But it was too late.

Levi might have caught her from hitting the floor, but she’d already fallen long ago.

And the happiness she should have felt was now overshadowed with deceit and despair.

Pain splintered through Levi’s fist when he planted it into the wall.

“That’s not going to help a damned thing,” King said.

Levi looked around blankly at the vacant warehouse.

Sara was gone.

Taken away by her father.
