“I thought I’d invite you to dinner at my place tonight.”
“Okay.” She folded her arms across her chest.
He ran his hand around the nape of his neck. The woman was going to be the death of him. “Would you like to have dinner with me at my place tonight?”
“Sure, why not.” She shrugged.
He chuckled and stepped toward her. “I’d kiss you right now, but I’m sure people are watching. I’ll just go for now. See you later, sweetheart. Six would be perfect.”
He moved around her and stepped off the porch.
“Devin?”
Turning, he faced her. “Yes?”
“Should I wear the stilettos?”
“Not necessarily, you can just bring them.” Touching the brim of his hat, he turned and walked off.
Sighing, he walked down the road to head for the barn. He was sure some things needed to be done for tomorrow. He was taking the trail ride in the morning, and a lot of the people were going on the excursion to town. The ranch had a couple of vans they used for that trip. Chip usually took the guests on the outing.
Entering the barn, he immediately sighed since it was cooler than outside. Not much, but any coolness helped. Spotting Jaxon, he strolled to where his brother was cooling down his horse.
“I’m heading home. No one is scheduled for anything. It’s too fucking hot out.”
“Yeah, me too. After I get Zander cooled down, I’m going to hit the pool and do a few laps. What are you up to?” Jaxon asked.
“Nothing really. I might hit the pool too.”
“Want to get together for dinner tonight?”
“Uh, I have plans…”
Jaxon turned to look at him. “Plans?”
“Yeah, plans. You got a problem with me having plans?”
Jaxon laughed. “You’re getting awfully defensive, little brother. Are those plans with Willa?”
“Maybe.”
“Yeah, more than maybe. Watch your heart, Dev. She’s leaving. You said it yourself.”
“Shit, I know but I can’t stay away. It’s too good with her.”
Jaxon stared at him then turned back to his horse. “Someone is going to end up with a broken heart, and I have a feeling it’s going to be you. Be careful.”
Devin nodded and walked away. He suspected his brother was right. He was crazy to keep seeing her when he was most likely going to get his heart broken, but he’d never felt this way before. There were a few times he’d thought he was in love, but it was nothing compared to the feelings he had for Willa. Just looking at hermade his heart beat faster and he wanted to pull her into his arms every time he was close to her. When he’d been on her porch earlier, he had wanted to pick her up, carry her inside, and take her against the wall.
Damn! The sex with her was incredible. He wondered if she didn’t care so much about the age difference, if it would be different between them. Would she stay with him then? She needed to get over it. He didn’t care about her age. All he wanted was her, and age was just a number. What were nine years anyway? As he’d first thought when he saw her, he wouldn’t care if she were twenty years older. He loved her and wanted her to stay with him. He just had to convince her. Maybe he’d ask her tonight after dinner.
At six o’clock, there was a knock on his door. Dolly ran to it, barking. She kept looking back at him as if to say, open the door! Hurry!Grinning, he watched her entire body start to shake with excitement.
“All right, I got it.” Opening the door, his breath whooshed out of his body as he looked at Willa.
“Are you going to invite me in?” she asked him.
“Sorry. Come on in, darlin’.” He held the door open wider for her.
