"What?"
"Look, it's for her safety," I growled. "Please take care of her. Don't ever bring her back to the alpha compound. I know you care for her, Logan."
Logan's face looked stern as he nodded. He clearly wasn't happy about the prospect of dealing with a rejected omega.
As I walked back to the bedroom, I paused multiple times, trying to think of another way we could be together. Carmen would never be safe if I chose to stay with her. Henry was completely enamored with her.
I needed to divert his efforts for now.
Building up my resolve, I twisted the doorknob and walked in, seeing Carmen entangled with Jaxon. Her face was flushed, and her stunning, thick thigh was wrapped around his waist. My breath caught in my throat at the sight of her. Axel lay on her other side, waiting for his turn to knot her. The poor bloke would, unfortunately, never get his taste of her.
I couldn't do this. But I had to do it.
Jaxon's knot released her, and they both turned to me. She sensed that something was obviously off with me, even though I tried to keep a cordial smile on my face to mask my inner turmoil about letting her go.
"Tyler, what's wrong?" she asked in a soft voice.
She knew something was wrong.
"Everything was a mistake between us," I said, breathing hard, feeling the lie spill from my mouth so easily.
Her face paled instantly. “What do you mean?”
“I wasn’t thinking clearly when I saw that you were in heat,” I said coldly, my heart shattering at the vulnerability in her gaze. She looked so innocent as her expression began to crack. I had to get the hell out of here before I took her in my arms and told her that it wasn’t how I really felt.
“But you said…”
“It was all fake,” I said, looking away. I couldn’t bear to see her face breaking at the sight of me. She was already starting to hate me, and I could feel it. “We need to leave, guys.”
chapter 13
. . .
Carmen
This couldn’t be happening again.
I grabbed the blanket, pulling it up to my chest as I sat up from the fog of my heat. Confusion whirled through my mind as I stared at Tyler’s face, searching for answers. I thought we were fine, but apparently, he wasn’t happy with me.
“Why?” I asked simply. “Am I not good enough? Please, just tell me the answer to that, and I will never ask again.”
Instead, he coldly turned away from me. “It’s nothing to do with you, Carmen.”
“Dude, what the fuck?!” roared Jaxon, his hand resting on the small of my back.
“Logan will take care of you, Carmen,” said Tyler, leaving me at a loss for words. I was too shell-shocked to respond. He suddenly stormed over to me and lifted my chin with a rough hand. Tears spilled down my face as he looked at me. “Let him knot you, okay? He cares for you, and he will treat you better than I ever could.”
“No,” I said, my voice shuddering. “We’re friends. There’s nothing between us, so you don’thave to worry.”
“Logan will knot you,” he said, his voice firm, tinged with the alpha bark that injected urgency into his words. I could tell he didn’t want Logan to knot me, judging by the angry look in his gaze, but I wasn’t sure. “Say yes.”
“Fine,” I said, just to make him leave me alone. If he didn’t want to tell me what was wrong with our relationship, I didn’t want to see him again.
“Good,” he said, wiping away my tears. “Don’t think of me again. This is the last time you’ll ever see me.”
“Bye,” I said without another word. I had no idea why he was rejecting me again, but I didn’t want the experience to be as brutal as last time.
My heart ached as he shifted into his werewolf form, landing on the floor and rushing out of the house into the snow.
