I shake my head, trying to clear the image away. Because if I continue down that line of thought, everything will go to hell.

The break room is blessedly quiet and empty. I start rummaging through the old boxes we keep there in search of food. I know we can get drinks from the vending machine, but there must be something else I can offer the alphas.

As much as it pains me, I want to please them. I want them to like me.

No, Lena, I tell my inner omega wolf. Why am I even trying to get them to like me? Leave well enough alone.Packs are trouble.

I wish I could listen to my inner self, but I was never very good at it. I can’t hide here forever, and I groan, wondering what the fuck I’m going to do now with these alphas in my library.

CHAPTER4

Damon

“She’s beautiful,” Max breathes as the librarian hurries away from us.

I can agree with him. I’m intrigued by Lena and her unusual eye color, one blue and the other green. Heterochromia is rare among humans and even more so among wolf-kind.

I watch her long, wavy, auburn hair bounce as she rushes to get us snacks.

“I told you there’s something about her,” says Gunnar when she’s out of earshot.

“We’re not mating her,” I reply in a low voice. “It would be a waste of time. Frankly, a human cannot get pregnant from us.”

It’s simple biology. And our knots would make it impossible to conceal our wolf nature.

“True,” says Max.

The library is quiet for a moment as we all contemplate Lena while thunder cracks outside.

“Lena is gorgeous, I won’t lie, but we can’t get involved with her,” I say, getting up and pacing around. I pick out a random book and flip through its colorful pages.

“How about just one night?” Gunnar suggests, and we all look in the direction she had run off toward.

“Absolutely not,” I growl, narrowing my eyes at him. “As much as I want to rut her right now, I can’t. She’s let us into her sanctuary out of the kindness of her heart, and I won’t have her feeling we’re taking advantage of her. She has no place for monsters like us in her life.”

“We can show her,” says Gunnar with a devilish glint in his eye and a hard-on in his pants.

I place the book back on the shelf and return to my comfortable chair, crossing one leg over the other. I start to remember the events of the night and decide to give my pack credit before they start fixating on the little human librarian.

“Glad we finally got rid of that piece of shit, Thomas. We did good work tonight.”

“Tearing him to shreds was the least we could do. You might call us monsters, Damon, but he's the real monster,” Gunnar growls.

“Very true,” I nod in agreement. If blessed with a child, I would protect it with my life. But I would need an omega for that. My thoughts drift to the pretty human librarian, and I quickly shake them away.

It’s not good to dwell on something we can never have.

“I found the snacks!” Lena calls out in her lilting voice as she hurries over to us, arms full of snacks and drinks.

My mood brightens at the sight of her, though I don’t quite understand why. Max and Gunnar also perk up when they see her.

I let my eyes roam over her shapely form, swallowing hard when I noticed how her large, creamy breasts seemed ready to spill from the front of her dress. All it would take is one swipe from my claw, and her dress would be in ribbons on the floor, exposing her to me. My desire hardens within my pants, and it takes all my willpower not to act on it.

She would be horrified by my thoughts, and I can sense that Max and Gunnar are also holding back.

Lena placesthe snacks on the small table in front of us, and I look away, trying to avoid staring at her juicy cleavage as she bends over.
