A chill danced through Mae as she watched the blood drain from his face. He met her gaze, his own stunned. His hand fell limply to his side when the call disconnected.
“The New York coven is under attack!” he said numbly.
“What?!” Violet gasped.
“Anya.” Dread widened Cortes’s pupils. “She went there today!”
Popo made an anxious sound.
“Dammit!” Mae cursed.
Her insides twisted at this unexpected turn of events. Why now?!
“Oscar must be in New York,” Serena said coldly. “That’s the only logical explanation for why you can’t pick upReveal.”
Mae’s nails bit into her palms. “I think you’re right.”
“That’s gonna make finding out where the Dark Council is holed up harder,” Lou grunted.
Vlad frowned. “Maybe Dietrich has contacts in this city.”
Serena’s expression tightened. “It’ll take time to root them out, if there are any. And I have the nasty feeling time is of the essence right now.”
Touch the ground…
Mae’s scalp prickled. She looked around wildly. “Did you guys hear that just now?”
Vlad shared a wary glance with Serena. “Hear what?”
Touch the ground, my daughters…
Mae’s heart stuttered.
Na Ri’s presence swelled inside her subconscious.Mother?!
Ran Soyun’s warmth filled their souls. He is trying to find you…
It took Mae a heartbeat to register the meaning behind the faint words. Hope stole her breath. She dropped down and pressed her hands against the asphalt, her pulse racing.
“Mae?” Vlad said, startled.
She ignored the incubus and closed her eyes. Please! Please, let this be what I think it is!
Her chest tightened painfully when a faint pulse of white magic laced with Hellfire Magic brushed against her fingertips.
Mae swallowed a sob, relief rendering her weak.
“You’re scaring me,” Vlad mumbled, his voice taut with fear.
She looked up at him fiercely through her tears. “It’s Nikolai! I can feel his magic! He’s looking for me!”
Serena traded a sharp look with Lou. He nodded curtly.
“Think you can follow it?” she asked Mae.
“Yes.”
“This could be a trap,” Vlad warned stiffly.
