Summer glared up at her mother. “He loves Warrior Clan as much as I do. He would want to see my collection.”

Thatcher’s face looked pained as he glanced from mother to daughter. “Maybe some other time. Okay?”

Summer’s face fell, and she turned and ran from the foyer. Her footsteps receded down the hall, followed by the loud slam of her bedroom door. Pressly’s cheeks blazed, and she aimed a murderous glare at Thatcher.

The air between them crackled with tension.

“Will you tell Beckett I need to talk to him?” I asked.

Pressly’s eyes flicked to me. “I thought things were good with you and Beckett.”

My face flushed. “I messed up.”

Pressly smiled, her face softening. “You’re not the first.”

Thatcher winced as if she’d punched him. “Love is messy. Sometimes people get hurt. But if they care enough, they pick up the phone and call the other person, even if they are falling apart.”

Pressly glared at Thatcher. “Phones work in both directions.”

“But he loves her.” Thatcher’s voice rang out in the night.

Pressly’s face cracked. “If I hear from him, I’ll let you know.” She stepped back and closed the door, then disappeared around the corner.

Thatcher sighed audibly, watching her go. He caught me staring and schooled his expression. “Don’t give up, okay?”

I wasn’t sure if Thatcher was talking to himself or me. My heart was breaking, but I knew Thatcher was right. I couldn’t give up. I’d never believed romance could be real, but Beckett had blindsided me with it, and now I didn’t want to live without it.

I had to fight for him.

Dear Readers,

Will this book slump ever end? Have I done something to aggravate the romance novel gods? I can’t seem to find a book that has decent characters, a love story, or even much of a plot.

I’ve heard wonderful things about Allison Ashley. She’s a new-to-me author who came highly recommended. Her previous books have glowing, gushing reviews, which makes me wonder, is it just me?

After a few pages, I wondered if the wrong book had been inserted between the binding. Was that the “big mistake” to which Ms. Ashley was referring? The cover was a cute picture of a man and a woman holding hands on the beach. Between the pages was a completely different story.

Plot overview:

I have no idea, I quit reading at chapter five.

Pros:

Trope: Older man, younger woman. I’m a sucker for this trope!

Cons:

Meet Cute: No one wants to meet their future lover on the examining table at the gynecologist. Can you say GROSS?
