“I don’t want to wait to see you again… for our next session I mean.”

I don’t want to wait to see him either. “I can come back whenever you want me to.”

“What does your schedule look like on Monday?”

Monday is consultation day with my new clients. I’m not sure how long I’ll be tied up with them. “I have something with work that day, so it would have to be a late afternoon appointment. When do you take your last appointment of the day?”

“Four o’clock but I have a regular that I see every Monday at that time. Is five o’clock too late?”

A five o’clock appointment means that he wants to stay after hours to see me. “I can be here a few minutes after five.”

“That’s actually perfect. I look forward to seeing you then.”

Our hands are still touching, and it takes every ounce of willpower I have to let go of him. “See you Monday right after five, Dr. Wes.”

Present Day

Haveyou heard the one about the star-crossed soul mates? A misdiagnosed schizophrenic and psychotherapist walk into a bar––

What an unexpected pairing the two of us make. Fate has one hell of a sense of humor.

My next session with Dr. Wes is going to be difficult. Terrifying. How am I going to open up to him, a psychotherapist, about my past? Even if he is my soul mate, and I’m certain that he is, how can I expect him to not come to the conclusion that he’s been trained to come to? For this to work out, he must forget everything he knows about mental health and see me as the exception to the rule for the sheer reason of being destined to be together… which he doesn’t yet know or understand.

He must trust his gut.

One mention of time travel or changing history and he could have me placed in a padded cell. Or the alternative––he believes me because he feels in his heart that everything I’m saying is true. It could go either way.

Dr. Wes felt the connection between us. He must have. I saw the expression on his face. The recognition in his eyes when he first looked at me. He might not understand how or why, but something innate was speaking to him.

To him, it’ll feel like the two of you have known each other since the beginning of time. I think that when he looks at you, his heart will beat differently. Because in your hazel eyes, he’ll discover the other half of his soul, which has been bound together with yours forever. It’s impossible for you to be torn apart by space or time or death. His words were magical.

I can’t wait to tell Coco. She’s going to be so excited for me.

“Knock-knock,” I call out as I rap my knuckles against the front door and step into my grandmother’s house. “It’s me, Coco.”

“Come in, my girl. I’m back here in the kitchen,” she calls out.

“Mmm… sure smells good in here. What’s on the menu tonight?”

“Spicy shrimp and grits casserole.”

I knew it. Because the nose knows. “One of my favorites.” Which makes it a perfect meal to share while we celebrate my exciting news.

“I know it’s one of your favorites. That’s why I’m fixin’ it. And I’m also cooking one of your favorite desserts: bread pudding with bourbon sauce.”

“With French vanilla ice cream?” Please say yes.

“Of course.”

“You spoil me, Coco. But you already know that.”

“Maybe I do a little, but I enjoy every second of it. And it keeps you coming around to visit this old lady. I’m not sure who reaps the benefits more, you or me.”
