“Don’t. This is the life that is intended for us. We’re engaged. We’re buying a house. Everything is falling into place in total perfection for us.”

“It is, isn’t it?”

I reach for the goose-down comforter and pull it up, covering both of us. “This bedroom is drafty.”

Dawsey pulls me against him, spooning me from behind, and rubs his hand up and down my arm. “Want me to turn on the heat?”

“I’ll be okay now that the covers are pulled up.”

“Do you want to put on what you brought to sleep in?”

“You told me to bring something sexy for bedtime.” I gesture to my naked body beneath the covers. “This is what I brought.”

“And a fine choice it is. But I can give you one of my T-shirts if you’re cold.”

“I’ll be fine if you hold me.”

Dawsey reaches for the lamp and turns off the light. “At your service, my lovely wife-to-be.”

“Wife. I’m going to be your wifey.”

“Mrs. Wescott.”

“Everyone is going to say we’re crazy and it’ll never last.” My mother will be the first to scream it from the rooftop.

“Let ’em say what they like but they’re wrong. This––you and me––is forever. They’re going to wish they could find a love like ours.”

“Do you think there are other people like us out there?” It’s a little arrogant to believe we’re the only two fated soul mates in the world who can time travel.

“If you think about all of the great loves throughout the ages, it stands to reason that there are others out there.”

“We may have been Cleopatra and Mark Antony.” I would have made a wonderful queen.

“I hope not. They had a hard time getting it together and then their lives ended miserably.”

“John Keats and Fanny Brawne?”

“Another tragic ending. They were star-crossed, and he died of tuberculosis.”

“Then perhaps Queen Victoria and Prince Albert?”

“It’s possible. I think theirs was a true love match.”

“It would be interesting to know who we’ve been other than Frank and Augustina.”

“We could always try past-life regression therapy,” he suggests.

“You do that?”

“I don’t, but we could do some research and find someone who’s experienced at it.”

Coco would kill me if she ever found out that I was fooling around with such things. “I’m not sure I’m brave enough after the coma.”

“Probably better to not play with fire. It doesn’t matter who we’ve been. I only care about who we are now.”

“Agreed, but I did enjoy my life as Augustina. Do you think you’ll dream of Frank and her tonight?”

“I don’t know, but I’m ready to find out. I’m tired. It’s been a big day.”
