But now… it was something altogether worse. Being with Gray might have been the final nail in the coffin.

Jamie was sending him to another’s bed to avoid him. More time wasn’t going to fix things between them. They needed to reconcile… completely. No child should be brought into their home, not while it was this broken.

He couldn’t do it again. There would be no baby.

Not unless…

There already was one.

Rohan sat on the edge of the bed and rested his elbows on his knees. He could still scent Gray on his nose, and he hated what it had done to his body. He’d showered quickly, wanting to rid himself of the scent before he saw Jamie again, but it hadn’t been enough.

He closed his eyes as he remembered the feel of Gray’s hand on his body, searching… exploring and learning him. The looks of desire… the gasps of pleasure.

Too bad they’d come from the wrong man.

Chapter Sixteen

The day after Gray’s return home…

Gray didn’t know what to say upon opening the door and finding Tensen there at his doorstep… with a bunch of beautiful flowers in hand. His stare met Tensen’s, and the man’s face grew red. But Tensen didn’t look away. He seemed unashamed, and there was something brave about that—it called to Gray.

“I know the last few days couldn’t have been easy on you. Rohan called. He asked if I could come by and check to see how you were faring.”

At Rohan’s name, he tensed. “Was it really Rohan… or Jamie?”

Tensen shook his head. “No, I don’t think it was Jamie’s needling at all. But he didn’t really have to ask me. I’d already planned to stop in and check on you.”

He smiled, a glint of something to his eye.

How Gray understood what that glint was, he wasn’t sure. No one had everglintedfor him before. He appreciated Tensen’s concern, but the solicitor’s attention was the last thing he needed at the moment. He’d just spent four days in another man’s bed—amatedman. Gray didn’t deserve Tensen’s consideration. Yet he took the flowers as they were thrust at him… searching for the right words to say as the sweet aroma filled his nose. He brought the bouquet up and inhaled.

“You could’ve just called. I know how busy you are.”

Tensen grinned. “I am… but I willalwaysmake time for you.”

Gray looked away. “I’m not one you should be spending your time on.”

“Oh… I think you are. I think you’re selfless and amazing… and I can only wish I was more than a beta so I would be worthy of a man like you.”

Gray’s head whipped up. His eyes widened, his mouth dropping open. He was stunned by the solicitor’s words.

His heart began to beat a little more fiercely… but it wasn’t attraction. Not that Tensen wasn’t handsome, because he was. He was kind and intelligent… and he was perfect in almost every way.

It was the simple fact Gray waswanted. That’s what made his heart beat faster. Right, wrong, or in between—someone wanted him.

But this man couldn’t be the one. A beta and an omega couldn’t be a matched set. There were no laws to allow him to become a beta’s mate. He wouldn’t be free to leave the Omega Quadrant. The best he could do was become Tensen’s whore.

Is it better to be alone the rest of my life or a kind man’s whore?

Gray took a step back, unnerved. “I suppose I should offer you a tea or coffee since you’ve made a special trip here.”

Tensen shook his head. “I’m not going to take any more of your time. I was just worried about you and wanted to ensure you were well.”

Gray met the man’s stare. “Thank you. You don’t know how much I appreciate your concern.”

Tensen’s soft smile made him wish again that things between them could be different. The solicitor leaned forward, and Gray inhaled, worried. But it was for no reason. Tensen placed a chaste kiss to Gray’s cheek before he turned to leave.

Gray watched the man’s retreating form, more confused than ever.
