“Mainly I just called Cliff, and he handled the rest.”
Her smile takes on a mischievous twist. “You should have invited Leon, though. I mean, everyone’s talking about how he saved the day and stopped that car that was following us.”
I grumble. “That again.”
“Do you think you could invite him over tomorrow? Have him recount the story? I really didn’t thank him enough this afternoon. Since he played my hero and all…”
Growling, I roll so I’m half on top of her, my arms caging her in. She falls onto her back below me, laughing hysterically.
“Not another word about Leon. Or any other man. Not when you’re in this bed.”
“Oh? Why is that?”
I drop my head to run my lips over her collarbone. My tongue caresses her neck, and then I close my mouth over the same spot and suck. Her laughs fade into whimpers.
“Because you’re mine,” I say.
Her fingers dig into my hair. The sweet scent of her skin, the slight hint of salt, the give of her body beneath me. All those details of her mix into an intoxicating combination.
“At times in my past, there was nothing in the world I wanted more than to be yours,” she says. “I love my career, even with the headaches it can bring. I love my friends. But hearing you say that… You don’t know how incredible it makes me feel. Iamyours. I’ve always been yours. No other man could ever come close to you.”
With every sentence she speaks, she winds me up even more. Quinn has been sleeping in my bed for weeks now, but it still astonishes me. I really get to have this woman. I get to share my days and nights with her. The happiness and the sorrow too, which isn’t nearly so bad when we can lean on one another. We love each other, trust each other, based on who we are deep down. Our age difference has nothing to do with it. If I’d listened to that disapproving voice in my head that said I couldn’t have her, then we’d have missed out on this.
“I’m so glad you waited for me to catch up,” I say. “I love you.”
“I love you too.”
My cock is half hard and interested in more. But Quinn’s had a rough day. I press a kiss to her temple. “What are you in the mood for?”
She stretches her arms over her head. “A nice, long shower. Want to join me?”
“I’d love to. Just let me go downstairs to set the alarm and make sure everything’s locked up.” I squeeze the curve of her hip. “You get started, and I’ll be back soon.”
“Be quick. Or I’ll have all the fun without you.”
If that’s not an incentive to move, I don’t know what is. I jog down the stairs, eager to get this chore out of the way so I can join Quinn, all naked and slippery, in the shower.
After gathering a few stray dishes from the living room, I notice we have leftover pizza. I radio my teammates in the car outside. They came in for a little while earlier, and I know they have a shift change coming up. But still, I want to see if they need anything. “Hey,” I say into my phone, “anybody hungry for leftover pizza?”
“No thanks, Foxy, we’re all good. You have a nice night.”
Ugh, that stupid nickname is spreading.
But as I’m about to switch off the kitchen light, a car pulls into my driveway. The headlights and movement instantly make me tense. I don’t recognize that car.
Within moments, one of my bodyguard teammates is out of his vehicle and closing in with a hand near his gun holster. In a flash, I unlock the hidden safe in my pantry and grab my own weapon. I head outside in my socks.
A slim, tall man is getting out of his car with his hands up. “Good Lord, don’t shoot. Unless you rent-a-cops want to get sued out of existence.”
It’s Derek Keller. The lawyer for Amber Printz. What thehellis he doing at my house?
I tuck my gun away and round Derek’s car. He’s about to say something else. But I keep advancing and push him roughly against the side of his vehicle, my hand on the center of his chest. “What the fuck do you want? Haven’t you done enough damage for one day?”
“I need to talk to Quinn.”
I fist his collar. My blood boils at the sound of her name in his mouth. “Wrong answer,” I snarl. “I’m not letting you anywhere near her.”
“Not your decision. You’re just the guard dog. You even have a dog’s name.Rex? That’s your actual legal name? What were your parents thinking?”
