“Good thing I was going to say you’re the sexiest woman I’ve ever seen.” Tex wound a strong arm around my waist, drawing me up against him. I shuddered when our bodies met. Then he tsked. “Wait. One more thing.”

I cocked my hip. “And that is?”

He pulled the band off my braid and started working the strands free. He didn’t rush. Just slid his fingers through mytresses until my hair fell around my shoulders in waves. His fingers went to my scalp next, short nails scratching with the perfect amount of pressure.

“Oh,” I groaned. “Wow, that’s nice. You can just do that all night. I’ll be happy.”

His incisors flashed as his mouth curved. “I can make you feel much better than this. We do have all night, though. Plenty of time for me to find out everything you like.”

Tex pivoted us so that he was closest to the bed. He sat on the edge of the mattress, squeezing the flesh of my ass to coax me into his lap. He didn’t pull me all the way up against him. Not yet. Like he’d said, we had all night.

We went back to those deep kisses. The kind that curled my toes in my socks, which I’d just realized I was still wearing. His hands were at my hips, thumbs rubbing little circles over my panties, edging them down a bit.

Then he tipped me back so my spine arched. With my breasts within easier reach, his tongue laved over one nipple, then the other.

“Tex,” I gasped.

“Call me Owen?”

“Owen.” I was too distracted to ponder it, but his name struck some chord in the far reaches of my brain. Whatever. I could call him Owen if he liked that better than the nickname. I put my hands on the top of his hat and held him there. “Owen.Yes.”

After a while, I found myself kissing my way down his chest. My hands moved to his thighs as my knees sank to the rug between his feet.

“You don’t have to do that.” Raw hunger dripped from his voice. He wanted me to do it. Hesowanted me to. But I was going to tease him a bit first.

My fingers dragged along the barbed wire tattoo. Herolled his tongue along the inside edge of his teeth, staring down at me. The bulge inside his boxers twitched.

I shifted my knees, and I hit against something on the floor. I glanced down at it, about to nudge whatever it was out of the way. But a glint of metal demanded my attention.

It was Tex’s—Owen’s—wallet, and it must’ve fallen from his jeans when he’d shucked them off. The leather had opened up at the fold, revealing a brass shield inside.

I knew exactly what it was.

I’d seen ones like it countless times before. Though this one read Hart County Sheriff’s Department.

And the picture ID on the other side had his face and a name below.

Sheriff Owen Douglas.

CHAPTER FIVE

Genevieve

“Something the matter?”he asked.

I picked up the wallet for a closer look, eyes straining as if those letters would morph into some other name. Or that the picture would shift into a different face. But it washim.

“You’re thesheriff?”

“I am,” he said sheepishly. “Is that a problem?”

I wasn’t usually an overdramatic person. I didn’t do hysterics. But at the moment, I was ready to scream or run. Make it both.

“You said your name wasTex,” I choked out.

“No, Dean calls me that. It was my call sign, like he said. I just told you my name is Owen.”

“After we were almost naked!” I threw the wallet at his lap. He caught it as it smacked him in the stomach. I stood and my hands flew to my boobs to cover them. “You said you were in wildlife management!”
