Kissing Genevieve last night had been good. But this time, when we knew just how terrible an idea this really was?

Fire.

I couldn’t explain this fury burning through my insides. This woman pissed me off so damn much. Twisted every word I said. Refused to let up.

And for some reason, the way I wanted to punish her was to get her moaning in ecstasy.

If she wanted to take out her anger on me too, even better. I could handle it if she could.Bring it on. But I wasn’t going to go easy on her. Nope. I would make it so good she was screaming.

I lowered my hands to squeeze the seat of her jeans. She hopped, legs and arms wrapping tight around me, nails scratching the back of my neck. I pushed her up against the wall. Our mouths didn’t separate. If anything, our kisses delved deeper.

Waves of heat cascaded over my skin. I growled into her mouth. I couldn’t even remember where I was anymore. This feltwild.

A knock on my door yanked me back to reality.

“Sheriff?” Keira said from the hallway. “Can I come in?”

Hell.

Genevieve dropped her feet to the ground and let go of me. She threw herself into a chair, while I scooped up my hat and retreated behind my desk. “Yep. Sure. Come in.”

Keira opened the door hesitantly. Her eyes darted fromme to Gen and back. Gen looked exactly like someone who’d been mauled with kisses, and I probably didn’t look much better. But I was thankful for the interruption. It had knocked sense back into me.

I wasn’t a reckless guy. The opposite, in fact.

What had I been thinking?

“Sorry,” my deputy mumbled. “Just wanted to see if you’re ready for the other witness interviews. The victim’s friends? They’re getting antsy.”

I rubbed my thumb over my bottom lip. “In a bit. I need to escort Ms. Blake up to Last Refuge first. She’s staying there.”

“I don’t need an escort,” Gen snapped.

“I say you do.”

We glared at one another, and Keira edged away. “Let me know when you’re back,” she said before shutting the door.

Gen jumped up from her seat. “If you’re hoping for a repeat of what just happened, don’t. That was a lapse in judgment.”

“No kidding. Worst idea in the history of bad ideas. No clue what came over me.”

She brushed off her clothes. “Maybe next time you can be a gentleman and keep your hands off me.”

I barked a laugh. “You begged me to kiss you. But I assure you, next time you make that request, I’ll run the other way.”

“If I ask you to kiss me again, then you’d better run. Because,I assure you, I will have lost my ever-loving mind.”

This woman, I swear. “Look, one of my deputies drove your car here. If you want, we can caravan up to Last Refuge. You don’t have to ride with me. But I need to ensure you make it there safely, and I also plan to have a word with my friends who own the place. No arguments.”

“I can argue if I want to.”

“I have no doubt of that.” I fitted my hat onto my headand grabbed my jacket. “Let’s get moving. Before either of us does anything else inadvisable.”

“I guess that’s wise.”

“So glad you agree.” I found my keys and led the way out of the office.

Allowing Genevieve to hang around my workplace would be bad enough. But if I invited her into my bed too? It would be like cozying up to a grenade and pulling the pin. And the casualty would be my career.
