“Better make it count.”

My fingers nudged up the edge of her T-shirt, caressing the warm skin beneath. She melted bit by bit. Letting my tongue stroke deeper into her mouth, until she finally returned the kiss with equal force.

She raised her arms to let me take her shirt off. Her messy braid fell to drape over one shoulder. I palmed her breasts and pressed my face to her neck and inhaled. I wanted to remember this. The feel of her skin and her subtle scent. My erection tented my boxers, and I ached with how much I wanted inside of her again.

Suddenly she twisted in my arms. Caught me by surprise. We tumbled together onto the mattress, Gen on top of me. A determined look in her pretty eyes.

I rolled us, grabbing her hands and pinning them to the bed above her head.

Things moved faster now. I got rid of her panties and my boxers. We made out and pressed our eager bodies together, still anticipating getting even closer. I let her push me onto my back and straddle me. Until I couldn’t take any more.

I shifted her so we were on our sides, facing one another, Genevieve’s top leg draped over my hip. I guided my tip to her entrance. Whispered her name as I pushed inside. Her tight heat enveloped me. I’d wanted to be the one taking charge. But this was both of us. Giving and taking in equal measure.

We moved slowly, finding a rhythm.

“I’ll miss you too,” she said.

I was out of words. All I could do was kiss her, rock inside of her, hold her against me. I had never felt this connected to another person before. But everything about it was bittersweet. Because we were saying goodbye.

We shifted again, but this time, I lay on my back and pulled her on top of me. My fingers searched out her hair tie and tugged it free, loosening her braid until the wavy strands fell around us both. Brushing my skin.

I angled my hips as I thrust into her.

“Right there,” she moaned. “Please.”

Gen cried out as she came. Tension coiled at the base of my spine, then lower, and then I was right there with her. I grabbed onto her hips, my cock pulsing inside her until I had nothing left to give.

Every time with her had been like this. Stolen moments, almost too intense. We burned hotter because we were never meant to last.

The minutes ticked by. My phone buzzed. But I didn’t want to move yet. I wanted to keep holding Gen, just like this, for as long as I could. My fingers stroked her hair, and our breaths were in sync.

It wasn’t until we separated that I realized what I’d done.

“Shit. I didn’t use a condom. I didn’t think about it.”

“I’m on the pill. I’m good if you are.”

“Yeah, I am. But I’m sorry. That wasn’t like me.” I was always careful. At least, I had been. Before all the lines started blurring.

She smirked. “I was there too. I could’ve said something.”

I lay back against the pillow, pulling her with me. Her head tucked beneath my chin. Just a little longer. “I guess we got our wild night at the Alpine Hotel after all,” I said.

“Wild morning. But yeah. This was better than it would’ve been the night we first met, though.”

Because we’d shared so much between then and now. “I think so too.”

My phone buzzed yet again, and I couldn’t ignore the time anymore. That was probably Norris. He and Keira had crashed here at the hotel as well, since we’d all been up until an ungodly hour. We’d planned to drive back to Hartley together. With Gen still in danger, I wanted the added layer of protection.

Gen and I showered quickly, then got dressed. My uniform from last night was dry now, if wrinkled, so I put it on. Gen had her same clothes. “Don’t forget the vest,” I said. “You’ve got it. Might as well wear it.”

She grumbled, but she put it on.

As soon as we got to Hartley, I would start making phone calls to arrange federal witness protection for her.

We met the others downstairs in the lobby. We all looked rough around the edges from lack of sleep. The day manager offered us coffee and muffins, which we were all grateful for.

While Gen chatted with Keira, Norris walked over to me. “We got a preliminary report on last night’s crime scenes, boss. If you had any thoughts.”
