Finally, she relaxed back into the seat and let it go. “She’s a lot of fun. I didn’t think we’d have much in common, and we don’t really… but we have enough to talk about.”
“You don’t have much in common? But you’re both submissive…” Sam had to admit that surprised him. Somehow, he’d figured that with both being submissive women… well, they would have lots to share.
Charlie’s expression said plainly that she’d understood his thought processes and thought he was dumb. “You… know that sharing one thing in common doesn’t mean you have identical interests or compatible personalities, right? I mean we’re not even the samekindof submissive.”
Since Sam had barely spent ten minutes in Katie’s presence, he had no idea what she was like. “You said you wanted a friend you could confide in. Someone who wouldn’t think our relationship was weird; I figured she’d work out in that department at least.”
“Yes, we have that in common. And we’re both in relationships with stubborn, bossy cowboys, so there’s that too.” She rolled her eyes at him and took a long drink of her hot chocolate. “You didn’t wonder why I’ve been so nervous about her coming here? I mean what if we hated each other on sight. It happens.”
Sam sighed as he stretched his long legs out in front of him and got comfortable. “I figured any girl Nick had fallen for would be okay.” That had been a mistake and he realized it now.
He probably should have put more thought into it. Maybe even had the girls meet first before making these life changing decisions. He hated to admit it, but the only thing he’d really known about Katie before deciding she and Charlie wouldobviouslybe good friends, was that Nick loved her.
And Nick was kinky so he’d assumed any woman he married would be too. He winced now, realizing how naïve that was. “Okay, so, I guess I made a few assumptions. But if you were worried it wouldn’t be a good fit why didn’t you say something?”
She hesitated and then shrugged. After a second, she set her mug down and got up, crossing over to drop into his lap. Her moods could be mercurial at times, but she seemed to be over her irritation, at least enough to want to be held again.
He welcomed her, wrapping her up in his arms and resting his cheek against her hair. When he breathed, he could smell the sweet strawberry scent of her shampoo.
“Ididtell you I was worried we wouldn’t get along. You kind of dismissed it as a groundless fear so I figured you just didn’t get it.”
She wasn’t wrong. He had and now he sighed. “Sorry, baby. I should have listened more carefully. I thought you were just having the normal ‘what if no one likes me’ thoughts that we all have around meeting new people.”
She snuggled into him and laughed. “There was probably some of that too. But my needing a friend wasn’t the only reason you hired him. The ranch is big enough that if we didn’t get along then, well, it’s not like I’d have to see her much. It would just be one less problem solved is all.”
“But… youaregetting along?” He hesitated to ask, but she’d seemed happy enough when she came through the door.
“So far, yep. She’s great. We had a wonderful time today and… actually, I wanted to ask you something. Um, we were thinking of doing a girl’s night out in the city so we can bond. Dinner, maybe a movie. Get a nice room and stay over so we don’t have to drive back late. What do you think?”
There was a little hitch and hesitation in her voice that made it clear she was nervous about asking. He wasn’t sure why. He didn’t have a problem with the two of them going off for some fun.
Maybe she was just nervous about doing it. It really had been a while since she’d gone off the ranch for more than errands and the occasional date with him. “Sure, that sounds like fun. When were you thinking?”
She was staring into the fire as she replied, “This weekend. I thought we’d go up early on Saturday to spend the day. Then come home Sunday afternoon.”
It all sounded reasonable and yet … he got the idea that she was hiding something from him, and he wasn’t sure why. He thought about it for a minute. In the end he decided he was being silly. “Just check in with me so I know you’re safe and keep—”
“Keep my phone on me. Yes, Daddy. I learned my lesson on that one,” she said, laughing as she turned her head to look up at him.
He snorted. “I had to punish you enough to get the lesson to sink in.”
She rolled her eyes at him. He retaliated with a playful bout of spanking. It was nothing more than a few light smacks, but it took their evening into a lighter, more fun mood. The last of her pouting disappeared in the laughter.
Sam wasn’t as tired as he usually was after work, and he was in no hurry to sleep. They put on a movie and cuddled in the bed. It was an old favorite, so they didn’t miss anything when they occasionally got distracted with talking … and other things.
CHAPTER9
The rest of the week rushed by in a blur. With Nick working full-time in the barn, Charlie and Katie were able to have several private meetings to discuss their weekend plans.
It was on the way to town that Katie told her the reason for the impromptu lunch. “I did some searching online and there are a couple of decent clubs in the city. One is only open on the weekends but it’s highly recommended and from what I read it’s pretty safe for single women.”
“Are you sure this is a good idea? Is Nick even going to let you go overnight? I mean you guys just got here,” Charlie pointed out. If she sounded nervous it was because she was.
She also wasn’t entirely sure Sam would be fine withhergoing either. He’d never tried to police her activities before, but his schedule wasjuststarting to lighten. Their romance was back on track, and they’d been spending a lot more time together.
It wouldn’t have surprised her if he’d wanted her to stay home with him. And there was also the fact that they barely knew Katie. What if he was nervous about her going off with her new friend?
Still, it wasn’t likely that he’d say no and she knew it. Sam had just assumed she would become immediate friends with Katie. It amused her that it hadn’t occurred to him that they might not even like each other. It was unlikely that he’d discourage them spending time together.
