“Shit, we’ll be showing off those fine ass legs of yours to stop traffic.”
Damn, she does have fine ass legs too. When this is over, I can’t wait to spread them open and go to town on her.
Galen continued, “Speaking of PEACE and making plans. What can you do on your end to expose the bullshit we’ve seen going down here?”
She really considered what he was asking for a long moment. “I just don’t see how. I mean PEACE is an organization designed to prevent a civil war between metahumans and humans. The fact that something like this is going down is something that would make PEACE’s mission a failure. I’m not sure how I’m supposed to stop it.”
“Tell your superiors, that’s how.”
“It’s not even close to that simple. It’s like this. If I go to superiors, they are in one of two camps. Corrupt, and they’re going to listen while planning to execute me. Or not corrupt, wherein they will want this thing those of us indoctrinated, call evidence.”
Galen snorted at the idea that they have to play by the rules considering everything he’s seen. “What about the media?”
“I like where your heads at, but it’s six of one, and half dozen of the other. Press will want evidence too. Correction, believable press will want evidence. We need not bother with the unbelievable press. This kind of shit will just get chalked up to conspiracy bullshit.”
“Damn it!”This shit is so frustrating.“How can we get some evidence?”
“I don’t know, we lost our phones ages ago. That’s everyone’s favorite spy device these days. We could have posted any of a half dozen things we’ve seen and started an expose taking down members of PEACE.”
She’s shivering badly. I’m going to have to do something.
“Hey, would you like to stop for a few and let me wrap you up? I’ve been told my people have really warm skin.”
Darla’s face looks so relieved. “Yes, please. I really want to get out of here, but I can’t stop shivering.”
They looked for and found a corner that wasn’t so… sewerish. They sat down on the ground with Galen’s back against a wall, he had Darla put her back into his chest while he wrapped arms around her.
“Thank you, that feels nice.”
Feels nice to me too. Soon this will be over and I’ll show you how much I can love you.
“I’m sorry this is all happening, and I promise when this is all over. We’ll find a way to right these wrongs.”
“I appreciate you saying that, but this is going to be a steep climb. I want you to know, that I’m glad we’ll be doing it together. Win or lose.”
“I do have an ace in the hole.”
“How’s that?”
“Not how, who.”
“Okay, who’s that?”
“My dad.”
“The guy that you ran away from and now considers you an outcast? That dad?”
“He’s the one.”
Darla jerked the corner of her mouth in skepticism. “How’s that going to go?”
“I don’t exactly know, but if anyone can sort this shit out, and make people answer for what they’ve done. It’s him.”
Thirty-Two
Darla
The warmth of Galen had wrapped around her and put her in a comfortable position for the first time in a while. She focused on it, allowing it to calm her nerves the best it could. It was hard when they had been escaping traps for the past few days. It seemed everyone was against them at this point.
