Spencer nodded in appreciation for Drago’s foresight. “You wouldn’t make a half-bad special operator yourself, buddy. You anticipate and contingency plan like a boss.”
“Thanks.” Drago stood and headed for the light switch to the lone bulb in a cage on the ceiling. “We probably ought to catch some sleep while we can. You take the bed.”
“You take it.”
“You’re the one who got the crap beat out of him a couple of days ago. You’re still healing. You take the bed.”
Spencer huffed. “How about we share?”
Drago’s hand paused over the switch. “You sure about that?”
He met Dray’s dark, intense gaze. “Yeah. I’m sure.”
Gulp. The last thing he saw before the room went pitch-black was the flare of fire in Drago’s eyes. It had been incendiary.
Fully clothed, he stretched out on the bed, rolling to face the wall so Drago would have a narrow slice of mattress to sleep on. The bed shifted and the mattress sagged, trying to roll him back toward Drago’s weight. He braced himself uncomfortably against the pull of gravity and man.
The bed went still.
Into the darkness, he said thoughtfully, “Who bugged your place? Or more to the point, who knew about your place?”
“The CIA. That’s it.”
“Who at the CIA? Is it widely known that you own that flat?”
“No,” Drago answered tightly.
“Also, someone would have had to know you were staying there.”
“And that someone had to be watching us to know when we went out. Those bugs were not in place when you and I left to go visit Khoury’s flat.”
“Were we tailed when we went to his place?” Spencer exclaimed.
“I’m beginning to wonder about that.” Drago’s voice sounded heavy. Worried.
“Who would follow us? And why?”
“Good questions.”
“Maybe they sent someone else out to rendition you,” Spencer suggested.
“How did that person know where we are? We removed our trackers and SIM cards.”
“Did they follow us from Berlin? Or even Tel Aviv?”
Drago’s weight shifted. It felt as if he rolled over to face Spencer. Suddenly Spencer’s entire body was tense and vividly aware of Dray’s nearness.
“If we were followed from Israel, it could have been you being followed and not me.”
Spencer snorted. “The buddies of the two thugs you sliced and diced probably weren’t too thrilled with us. But I don’t see them being organized enough to bug your place. It would be more their style to follow us and jump us in some dark alley.”
“Ahh, kind of like the caveman thinking of soldiers,” Drago said dryly.
“Hey! I’m not a caveman!”
“I haven’t seen you in your most primal state in a few years. If you want to get naked and let me reduce you to pure instinct, I’ll let you know if you are or not.”
Naked. With Drago. Here. Now. In the dark.
