Had she even heard a word Cameronsaid?
“You poor thing. Katie here told me what happened. Are you hurt? Do you need me to get you somemedicine?”
Something told me that she’d be the last person I’d want giving me first aid during any kind ofcrisis.
“It’s Kate,” I said, though I was sure she didn’t hear me. Either that or she was ignoringme.
Cameron shook his head. “I’m going to have to check if you covered your trackssufficiently.”
“Whattracks?”
“The ones you don’t even know you made, Evie. Will there ever be a time when you actually listen and do as you’retold?”
“Don’t get snippy with me, Cameron Madden. You lost that right when you dumpedme.”
I caught his uncomfortable glance, and I wondered how in the world someone like Cameron had gone for someone like Evie. Our hostess came out the backdoor.
“Looks like you’re going to have a full house, Silvia,” he saidapologetically.
“My home is your home.” She smiledkindly.
“How long before the cabin will be fixed?” Evieasked.
Not soonenough.
I wanted to like her, but each time she spoke and batted her long lashes at Cameron, I found it moredifficult.
“I’ve been looking forward to taking a decent shower,” sheadded.
“The cabin will take a while. I’m going to try to assess the damage today, but definitely a week or so. Why don’t you go home, Evie? I’m sure you miss your king-sized pillow-topbed.”
“Oh, no. If there’s damage, I can help. I know you’re good with your hands, but there’s nothing better than my designer eye.” She twirled one of her curls around her finger and again fluttered her lashes as if they belonged to the butterfly family. Jesus, that girl had no limits. I bet if we took her up on her offer, the cabin would end up looking like a Disney castle swallowed by a pink glittermonster.
“Sure, but you’ll need to get a construction hat, a pair of safety boots, and clothes that can beruined.”
She frowned, and then reached for Cameron’s bicep and squeezed it while biting her lip. He once again removed her hand. She was clinging to him like a suctioncup.
“Why don’t I leave a man’s work for a real man, then? I think I would be more help around here. You know how much I loveanimals.”
I had a feeling that Cameron wanted to roll his eyes as hard as Idid.
“I mean, look at this place. It’s a mess.” She pointed to the back, where a tarp I hadn’t seen before was covering part of theenclosure.
“The wind tore through the fence. I was going to get Gary to fix it today, but his roof is leaking.” Silvia pulled her fingers through her hair. She looked like she had so much on her plate that the last thing she needed were unexpectedguests.
“I’ll help you with the fence, Silvia. I’m going to go get our clothes from the cabin and pick up some supplies from Gary, and then I’ll have the rest of the day to work on thefence.”
“Thank you,Cameron.”
“Isn’t he amazing?” Evie snaked her hands up Cameron’s armagain.
“Boundaries, Evie.Remember?”
“Don’t be silly, Cameron. I know exactly where Ibelong.”
Evie’s idea of belonging was way different than mine because if it were me, she’d be on the other side of the country, on a beach working on her Californiatan.
Both fawns finished their milk and hopped off to the patch of green grass in the back where they began chasing oneanother.
