“All right. Here goes nothing.” I lifted the paper and focused on the small window with one clearly visible pinkline.
“It’snegative.”
“Are yousure?”
“Yeah. It’s just one line.” I slouched on the toiletseat.
“Hey, we knew this would take a while. The doctor said your body will take time to heal, especially after what you’ve beenthrough.”
“I know. I was just sosure.”
“The good news is that we can keep trying, right?”
“Right.”
“What’s the badnews?”
“There is no bad news.” He smiled and released the clip that kept my hair up. “Would you like me to joinyou?”
“If you do, we’ll waste all thewater.”
“All right. I’m going to shavethen.”
I sighed. “I can’t wait to see what you’ve done with the bathroom at thecabin.”
Cameron had been bragging about the renovation every day, and I couldn’t wait to see the final design. I undressed, turned on the shower, and stepped inside. The warm stream that I was expecting to turn even warmer shocked my skin. I screamed and jumped out of the shower. “Ahh!”
Cameron grabbed my towel and wrapped it around my body. “What’swrong?”
“The water. It’sfreezing.”
“Evie!”
Chapter 7
Cameron
“Evie, how many times do I have to tell you? You can’t be here.” I climbed down the ladder and removed the hammer from Evie’shand.
“Well, I can’t be at Silvia’s house, either. Do you know how much work there is to bedone?”
Of course I knew, and I had a lot of work to do at the cabin as well, but with Evie coming around every day, that work was beingdelayed.
“Why don’t you just go back home,Evie?”
Her gaze fell to her perfectly manicured toes. “The way downhill is much harder thanup.”
I meant home as in NewYork.
“Then take off the heels and enjoy the natural foot massage. They say the soil in these parts of the woods is filled withminerals.”
She crossed her hands over her chest and nearly banged herself in the head with the hammer she was holding in her hand. I carefully removed it from her grip and set it on atoolbox.
“If you want to know the truth, I don’t want to spend Thanksgiving on my own. Your parents are always going on about me being this and me being that and oh so not right for their son and granddaughter and don’t think I don’t know y’all call me Barbie behind myback.”
I sighed. My brother might not have realized it, but Lola, his current girlfriend, and Evie, his ex, had way more in common than I’d originally thought – specifically their chattynature.
“Don’t you missSophie?”
