“If you’re staying up in Canada, the winters can getnasty.”

“Thanks for the tip. I’ll keep that inmind.”

His brows narrowed. If he thought he’d get any information out of me, he waswrong.

“I’m assuming that’s why you’re at this hospital. It’s the closest one to theborder.”

“Assumptions can bemisleading.”

Clearly confused, the asshole frowned, and I’d had enough ofhim.

“If you don’t mind, I have to rest now. You know where the dooris.”

There was no need to be polite. We both knew whose side he was on, and after I found Cortez and Donaldson, he was next on my list of scum to dealwith.

“Get well soon, Cameron. It would be a shame if Kate missed you for too long, wouldn’tit?”

The fucker turned on his heel and walked out the door. If it hadn’t been for the IV tied to my arm and a nightgown that would probably expose me to an eighty-year-old grandmother, I would have gone after him. I’d pick him up by the throat and drag him up against the wall, demanding to know where he was hiding themobster.

Fuck! How much morphine did they giveme?

Not a moment after the director left, Charlie came back into theroom.

“Is everythingokay?”

“Yeah, I thinkso.”

“Listen, Cameron. I’m not just your doctor, I’m your friend. What’s goingon?”

“I think I might have been too harsh with Evie about the phone call to Jax. She should be the least of my worries. Looks like I may have a problem on my hands. Listen, is there any way you can get me out of here during thenight?”

I waited, but he didn’t reply. Charlie was having a difficult time being my friend and a doctor, so I decided to pull on his heartstrings. “If I stay here, I can guarantee you that I will be dead in the next twenty-four hours, and God knows what will happen toKate.”

He sighed. “Cameron, you just had a serious surgery. As your doctor, I ask you to please stay longer. Your wound is still closing and you need time to heal. If you leave, you’re risking yourlife.”

“And as myfriend?”

I watched as he sighed with reluctance. He wouldn’t say no to me. Not as afriend.

“As your friend, I’ll make sure there’s a car waiting for you at two in themorning.”

“Thankyou.”

“And I’ll get you some oralantibiotics.”

“I appreciate it,friend.”

“Just take care of yourself, will you? Hug that girl of yours for me and stay safe. I’ll stay out of town for a while, just in case someone makes a connection and follows me. Besides, looks like I’ll be preoccupied with Evieanyway.”

“Thanks, and goodluck.”

“You too. Now rest while you can. Your trip without much morphine won’t bepleasant.”

“Gotit.”

Charlie left, and I lay back and closed my eyes. But all I could see when I closed them was Kate’s bloodied body that I carried out of a crypt three months ago. She had been so frail that night that I’d been afraid she wouldn’t make it. I was afraid that I’d lost her forever. Somehow, I’d been given a second chance. I’d been given another shot at happiness with a woman who had more hope in her heart than anyone I’d ever met. I would die forher.

At two in the morning, I walked out the hospital back door to where a black beat-up van with a driver was waiting for me. I opened the door, and the man asked, “YouCameron?”
