Page 52 of Forsaken Promises

Iwake to the warm caress of sunlight streaming through the windows, bathing the room in a soft, golden glow. As consciousness slowly seeps in, I become aware of the gentle weight in my arms, the silky brush of hair against my skin.

Looking down, I’m greeted by the sight of Sofia nestled against my chest, her face relaxed in peaceful slumber. In the morning light, her beauty takes my breath away. Her long, dark lashes fan out against her cheekbones, casting delicate shadows on her sun-kissed skin. Her full, lush lips are parted slightly, tempting me to lean in and taste their softness.

But it’s more than just her physical allure that strikes me in the moment. It’s the realization that I get to wake up to this, to her, every single day for the rest of my life. The thought sends a warm flutter through my chest, a sense of contentment and rightness that I haven’t felt in longer than I can remember.

There was a time when the idea of being tied to Sofia, of having my fate so intricately intertwined with hers, felt like a prison sentence, a suffocating yoke that would rob me of my freedom and autonomy. But now, gazing down at her sleeping form, I'm starting to see it in a different light.

Maybe being married to Sofia isn’t a restriction but an opportunity, a chance to build something real and lasting, to create a partnership that’s based on love and mutual respect. With her by my side, I feel like I can take on anything—including the daunting task of one day stepping into my father’s shoes as the head of the Sicura empire.

Sofia brings a unique perspective to the table, a deep understanding of the inner workings and politics of our world that comes from being the daughter of the Marino crime boss. With her insight and my determination, I have no doubt that we can lead our Family to new heights of success and prosperity.

But more than that, I’m starting to realize that I want to be the man she deserves, the partner who supports and cherishes her, who works every day to be worthy of her love and trust.

Because if there’s one thing I've learned from the rocky road of our relationship, it’s that Sofia Marino is a rare and precious gift, one that I’ll spend the rest of my days treasuring, if she’ll let me.

As I watch her stir, her eyes fluttering open to meet mine with a sleepy smile, I feel a rush of tenderness and gratitude wash over me. Yesterday was a turning point for us, a chance to reconnect and rediscover the deep bond that's always drawn us together. I know it’s just the beginning.

I lean in, brushing a gentle kiss against her forehead as I whisper a soft, “Good morning.” In that moment, I'm overwhelmed by the depth of my feelings for her, by the fierce protectiveness and tender affection that well up inside me.

My mind wanders to the future and the responsibilities that await me. For so long, I’ve been running from the idea of taking over my father’s empire, of shouldering the burden of leadership that comes with being a Sicura. But now, with the weight of my promise to Sofia and her sisters resting on my shoulders, I’m starting to feel a shift in perspective.

Maybe it’s time for me to step up, to embrace the authority and influence I was born into. Because if I’m going to keep Sofia and her family safe, if I’m going to be the rock they can rely on in the uncertain times ahead… then I can’t shy away from the power and resources that come with my position.

The thought is daunting, but also strangely exhilarating. Like I’m finally ready to take on the challenge, to prove to myself and everyone else that I have what it takes to lead our Family into the future.

With a sigh of reluctance, I press a gentle kiss to Sofia’s forehead, whispering against her skin. “I have some business to attend to, Sof, but I’ll be back before you know it.”

She makes a sleepy sound of protest, her arms tightening around me for a moment before relaxing. I carefully extract myself from her embrace, feeling a pang of loss as I leave the warmth of our bed.

But as I get dressed and make my way downstairs, I can’t help the smile that tugs at my lips, the jaunty tune that I find myself whistling under my breath. It’s like a weight has been lifted from my shoulders, like I’m seeing the world through a brighter, clearer lens.

As I enter the breakfast nook, Valentina looks up from her coffee mug, one perfectly groomed eyebrow arching in surprise. “Well, well, well. Someone’s in a good mood this morning,” she remarks, a knowing smirk playing at the corners of her mouth.

I shrug, pouring myself a cup of coffee and taking a sip. “What can I say? It’s just a beautiful day.”

Valentina coughs, the sound suspiciously similar to “someone got laid” muttered under her breath. I shoot her a look but can’t quite suppress the grin that breaks out on my face.

Because she’s not wrong. Last night with Sofia was… incredible, a turning point in our relationship, a chance to reconnect and rediscover the deep bond that’s always drawn us together. And waking up with her in my arms this morning, feeling the rightness and inevitability of our love… it’s like everything has clicked into place.

With a sense of purpose and determination thrumming through my veins, I make my way to my father’s office. I knock on the heavy wooden door, waiting for his gruff “Come in” before entering.

My father looks up from the papers scattered across his desk, his dark brows rising in surprise as he takes in my presence. “Dominico. To what do I owe the pleasure of your company this early in the morning?”

I take a deep breath, squaring my shoulders as I meet his gaze head-on. “I wanted to talk to you about something, Father. Something important.”

He leans back in his chair, his fingers steepling together as he regards me with a mix of curiosity and wariness. “I'm listening.”

“I’m ready to start taking on more responsibility within the Family business,” I say, the words coming out in a rush. “I know it's something I’ve always known how to do, but you’ve had to push me into it in the past. But I'm telling you now, I’m ready. Ready to learn, to step up and be the leader that our Family needs.”

For a long moment, my father simply stares at me, his expression unreadable. Then, slowly, a smile starts to tug at the corners of his mouth, a glimmer of pride sparking to life in his eyes.

“Well, well. It’s about damn time, Son,” he says, his voice gruff but tinged with an undercurrent of approval. “I was starting to wonder if you’d ever pull your head out of your ass and realize the potential you have.”

I feel a flush of embarrassment and defensiveness rise to my cheeks, but I force myself to stay steady. “I know I haven’t always been the most… focused when it comes to the Family business. But things have changed. I've changed. And I'm ready to prove that to you, to everyone.”

My father nods, his gaze assessing as he looks me over. “Alright, then. Let’s see what you're made of.”

He shuffles through the papers on his desk, plucking one out and holding it up. “I’ve got a job for you. One of our men, Gaspare, has been acting suspiciously lately. I have reason to believe he may be disloyal, may be working with the O’Malleys to undermine our operation.”
