“Charlie,” I moan. “Fuck me.”
He leaves my breast and kisses my mouth before biting and sucking the side of my neck.
“I’m not going to fuck you. I’m going to make love to you like you deserve.” He opens my legs and slides a finger inside my wet pussy. “So wet for me. Only for me,” he says, and I get wetter at his possessiveness.
“Only for you, baby,” I agree. He slides inside of me without any more warning, stretching me fully. “Forever.”
“God, you feel good. Hold on,” he orders right before he picks up the pace. He hooks an arm underneath my leg and raises it. I put it over his shoulder, and he slides deeper inside of me. Our bodies are now completely coated with sweat. The only sound in the room is our moans. He kisses me and silencesmy cries of pleasure. The orgasm takes me by such force that I temporarily forget my own name.
“Lettie,” he moans into my mouth. I wrap both legs around him and slide my hands down his slick back. I open my mouth, and we kiss until he softens and slides out of me. When he rolls off my body, I turn to my side to face him and he does the same to me. We intertwine our legs together while I look into his eyes.
He has his usual post-lovemaking glow, but there’s something more there. A sense of unease travels up my spine, and I reach for him. I stroke his cheek, and he smiles at me.
“What is it?” I ask.
He pulls me into his arms and kisses my forehead. “I’m so happy you’re here with me.”
Chapter 52
Charlie
“You have a what?” Violet says. She says it so loud that I take a step back in the kitchen. I bump into the stove and knock over the frying pan that contains our breakfast. “No,” she says. She gives me her back, shakes her head, and waves her hands.
“Violet!” I reach my hand toher, but she continues to walk away. I try to go after her, but I can’t seem to get my feet to work. “Come back.”
She appears in front of me with tears in her eyes. “How could you do this to me?”
“I didn’t. It happened before—”
“Liar!” she screams. “You told me there was no one else. You told me I was the only one. The only one you remember. The only one who matters.”
“That’s all still true, Lettie. I need you. Please.”
“I knew this would never last.” She starts to move away from me again. I reach for her, but she’s too far away. I’m stuck in my spot, unable to go after her.
“Violet!” I yell. “Violet! Don’t go!”
“Charlie! Wake up!” I feel someone shaking my shoulder and tapping my cheek. My eyes pop open and I look into Violet’s brown eyes. She cups my face. “I think you were having a bad dream. You’re all sweaty.” She pulls off her t-shirt and wipes my face with it. “What were you dreaming about?”
I take the shirt and toss it aside. I wrap my arms around her and pull her on top of me. I hold her so tight that she whimpers until I reluctantly loosen my hold.
“What is it?” She lifts her head and looks into my eyes. “And don’t say nothing. You’ve had this same wild look in your eyes since you picked me up yesterday.”
She slides off my body and lies on the bed. I stand and realize the time has come for us to have this conversation.
“You’re right. We need to talk.” She sits up and wraps her arms around her knees.
“That sounds ominous,” she says. “Should I be worried? Do you want to break up? If you do, just sayit because—”
“No, Violet, I don’t. I don’t know how you can even ask me that.”
“Because you’re not acting like yourself, and it’s scaring me. Is the long-distance thing too much?”
It is. I hate it, and I wish we didn’t have to do it, but that has nothing to do with this.
“I hate the long-distance thang,” I admit, “but there’s something else I need to talk to you about.” I run my hand over my head and face and groan. “Let me shower first and we’ll talk.”
“Fine,” is all she says. I walk out of the room, still naked from the night before. After brushing my teeth, I turn the shower on hotter than usual, and I take my time washing my body and my hair.
