Gage groaned again.
“Sorry.” Well not reallyalthough now he had the pleasure of drinking in her beauty theentire time he watched over them. “But the Pyro Devils failed toprotect her and not only that, they gave her over to one of theBrutal Demons so under no circumstances does she go back with thePyro Devils nor do any of the Brutal Demons come within twenty feetof her.”
“I was just kidding around,Bro. I didn’t realize she was now yours. Of course, I’ll tail themtoday. Whatever you need.”
I gave him a friendlysmile. “I know any one of you would do the same. I just had noticedyou were off so it made it easier so we wouldn’t have to alter theschedule.” And Gage was one of the ones I trusted even more thanthe others. Withmylife, I wouldn’t be as choosy but with hers, she got one ofmy closest brothers. And I chose to allow the ‘yours’ comment togo. I didn’t want to embarrass her in front of them. But she knewthe situation. And I didn’t know how to explain things anyway. Shewas mine to protect, but that was it. “How disgusting is the breakroom? And not according to our standards. I want Sage to be able tohang out somewhere comfortably until Angel and Misti gethere.”
“Surprisingly, it’s not badat all. I don’t even think there are any pairs of dirty underwearlittering the floor.” Gage ribbed. “Or condom wrappers.”
Sage burst into laughter. “This iswhat it would have been like if I had had brothers growing up.”Twisting, she gazed up at me, her eyes bright with amusement. “I’llbe fine back there. And being here doesn’t set me on edge one bit.I don’t want to keep you from work any longer.”
I wasn’t worried about her safety; Iwas concerned for her sanity. We were pigs; no way I’d deny that, but after her horrible nightmare last night and listening to Angelrecount what had happened to her and confirming her fears; I didn’twant to cause her any more unease. “I’ll get you settled back thereand then send the girls back when they get here.” Without thinking,I settled my palm right above her gorgeous ass and steered her inthe direction of the break room. Bracing myself, regardless of whatGage had said, I slowly opened the door and was astonished todiscover that the room was in fact acceptable. It smelled likegreasy pizza and old socks, but at least the items were no longerthere.
“I was expecting a muchworse smell.” She giggled. “I’m good back here until the girlscome. You’ve been really great to me. If you can show me how to getsomething good on the television; I’ll park my ass on that leatherchair and veg out.”
Grabbing the remote from the scuffedand chipped coffee table in front of the tattered blue sectionalthat made up a large part of the perimeter of the room, I clickedon the television and then handed her the controller. “The up anddown arrows should be all you need. The other buttons might pull upsomething you don’t want to watch.”
Grinning, she sat down. “I don’t knowthat it would make me uncomfortable, but it might prove awkward ifone of the guys stopped back and I had clicked on it byaccident.”
“They’ll behave here. Atthe club might be another story, but I’ll take care of thingsbefore you step foot in there. We surprised them here today.”Giving her a nod, I headed back out to the bay. Since no newcustomers had stopped in yet, I walked over to the farthest bay tocontinue working on refurbing a 1932 maroon Ford Roadster. Theowner was an older gentleman who was paying us a nice chunk ofchange to work on this beauty. Days we weren’t swamped with othercustomers, I spent the time restoring her to her natural beauty andgetting her in mint working condition.
Gage dropped down onto a huge toolboxand gave me a funny look. “You’re probably not going to answer, butI’m going to ask anyway. What’s the story with thegirl?”
“I told you what hadhappened. At least the abridged version which is all you are goingto get.” I stuck my head under the hood to check out some of thevalves. “I think that’s enough information so you know how vigilantto be while guarding her.”
“Not what I meant and youknow it. But I guess that’s all I’m going to get from you. But Iwasn’t really expecting anything else, just hoping. Well, firstimpressions, I like her. I think you got a great girl there.” Hestared at me for a beat and when I didn’t respond, stood up andheaded out to the main bays.
One of the main reasons I liked Gage.He didn’t pry and knew when to leave well enough alone. My phonevibrated in my pocket so I slipped it out.
Remus: Church tonight7
Me: okay
I just had to figure out what to dowith Sage while I attended. Maybe as long as Misti and Angelplanned to be at the club, Sage could hang out with them. I didn’twant her left alone. Any brother who was there would be in Church, but I didn’t trust the other girls. They were vindictive cunts. Andnot that I believed Sage was weak – far from it – I didn’t want herexposed to their shit. She had had enough shit tossed her way andneeded time to deal with that before coming under fire from thosebitches.
About a half an hour later, the girls’voices coming from the main bays drew my attention from theRoadster and I strolled out to talk to them. Bolt had one handrubbing Angel’s ass while both of Hedge’s hands were resting onMisti’s backside. Shaking my head, I chuckled. We didn’t do that tocustomers; so there was that.
Stopping in front of the girls, Itugged my wallet out of my back pocket and gave Angel a wad ofcash. “If you need more, you can take her shopping again anotherday. That’s probably your aim anyway.” I also handed her a businesscard for the garage. “Also, stop in whatever cell phone retaileryou come across before you start your shopping and give them mycard and tell them to call me. I want to set Sage up with a phonetoday. Wait there until the sales person is off of the phone withme to get an estimate of when you can pick it up. I want them toset it up with some apps as well, but I’ll talk to the person.” Iwas having them install a tracking app like we had for all of ourmembers, including the girls. Even though I planned for her tonever be left alone and wasn’t intending on her sticking aroundlong term, I wasn’t taking any chances.
“We’ll take good care ofour girl. Where is she anyway?”
“In the breakroom.”
Untangling herself from Hedge, Mistiheaded back the hallway.
When the two of them emerged from theback, I added. “Gage will be tailing you guys. I guess it would befine if he ate with you, but he pays his own bill.” I shot Gage asmirk.
“Always a bastard. Not surehow Sage can stand being with you.”
“He is a bit growly but Ijust punch him in the nose like you would a shark.” Sageteased.
“You do know they don’treally recommend doing that?” Gage grinned at her.
She shrugged. “I don’t go in the oceanand he’s not a shark, but it works.”
“Damn, Ryder. How did youget so lucky to find her? I want one.”
“Well, good luck. Becausethis one is mine.” My mouth blurted of its own accord. She was mineto protect – that was it – but the others wouldn’t see it that way. However, that could have the potential to be a good thing as wellbecause that would mean they would be more likely to leave heralone.
