“And now you see me,” Logan added with a chuckle. But the laughter faded a moment later when he added, “What the hell is going on? Why are you being so difficult about all of this?”

“About what?”

“You know exactly what.”

She tilted her head in question.

“You need me to say it?” He crossed his arms over his chest.

Faith had to work hard to ignore the sensations that flashed through her at the sight of his thick bicep muscles. To have those arms wrapped around her and—

“Us,” he said, interrupting her train of thought. “Why are you being so fucking difficult aboutus.”

“There is no us, Logan.” Faith hoped her words sounded more convincing as she spoke them than they did in her head. “We work together. That’s it.”

“No.” He wasn’t giving up. “You know that’s not it. That’sneverbeen it and you’re just—”

“Faith?”

They both turned to see Sarah walking toward them. She had a giant garment bag cradled in her arms. “Can I talk to you for a second?” she asked as she got closer.

“No.”

“Of course.”

They spoke at the same time, and Faith glared at Logan and turned back to Sarah, who had stopped walking and looked cautiously between them. “Of course you can talk to me. Logan and I were just finishing up here.” She took the dress from Sarah’s arms and handed it to Logan. “Would you make yourself helpful and hang this up in the back room for me?” She smiled as sweetly as she could manage despite the fact that her heart was racing just looking at the man.

What was it about him that made her so crazy? And scared the hell out of her?

Logan hesitated, looking first to Sarah and then back at Faith, before taking the garment bag from her. “Of course, boss.Happy to help. And we’ll finish our conversation later.”

Faith waited until Logan had disappeared back inside the barn before grabbing Sarah’s arm and hurriedly leading her toward the house on the other side of the parking space. “I’m desperate for a glass of wine. Come on.”

A few minutes later, they were settled on Faith’s porch with a glass of pinot noir. “Sorry about that,” Faith said. “And I didn’t even ask you if you had a few minutes. I just kind of hijacked you for a drink.”

Sarah laughed. “I don’t mind, honestly. I think I could use one. Or two.” She shook her head and looked back to Faith. “But I didn’t mean to interrupt, Faith. It looked like you two were in the middle of something.”

“No more than usual.” Faith took a long sip of the liquid and let it slide down her throat to warm her insides. She didn’t want to talk about Logan. Not with anyone. Not when she couldn’t figure things out on her own. “What was it you needed to talk about? Is everything okay?”

“Honestly?”

“Of course.”

Sarah took a deep breath and exhaled slowly. “Yes,” she finally answered.

It was bullshit and they both knew it. But just like Faith didn’t want to talk, she wasn’t going to push her friend.

“But I did want to apologize for being a little difficult in the photo shoot today,” Sarah added. “I wasn’t expecting my partner to be Brody, and I had a hard time with...well, it was all just a little unexpected. And I’m sorry if it caused you any troubles at all with your pictures. I know you’re working hard to get the ad campaign off the ground and you didn’t need to deal with—”

“Whatisgoing on with you and Brody, Sarah?” Maybe the question was too up front, and maybe she should have been more sensitive about it, but Faith didn’t care. Something was clearly bothering her friend, so she might as well get to the bottom of it. Besides, it was so much easier than dealing with her own issues.

“Nothing,” Sarah answered after a moment. She took a noticeably large gulp of her wine and looked out over the porch. “I think I’ve shut off the possibility of that forever.”

From what Faith had seen, there was pretty much zero chance of that. Not with the way Brody looked at her. That was a man in love, there was no doubt. Hell, if even a woman like Faith, who had spent the majority of her life cynical about the entire idea of it, could see it in the way Brody looked at Sarah—and if she were honest, the way she looked back at him—then it was definitely there. “That’s highly doubtful.” Faith lifted her glass of wine and grinned at her friend. “Not from what I’ve seen.”

“You haven’t seen it all.”

“Obviously not. But I don’t think I need to.”
