“You’re falling asleep,” she finally said. “I should let you go. You probably have an early call tomorrow.”

“I am and I do. I love you, Steph. I’ll see you soon.”

She stared at the quiet phone long after they hung up. It had been good to hear his voice, but in some ways it just made the loneliness worse.

ChapterEight

Every single weddingFaith had been in charge of in the last few months had some glitch of some kind: A torn hem on a bridesmaid’s dress. An intoxicated groom. A photographer who didn’t show up. Or arguing in-laws. She’d seen a lot, but she hadn’t yet seen a missing bride. Of course, that particular extra-special problem would present itself the day she was operating on very little sleep with her pregnant and sick sister due home, and the sexual tension between her and Logan so thick that she couldn’t even look at him without blushing.

Somehow Faith managed to calm down the bride’s parents, keep the groom from knowing his bride was missing, andtrack down the woman who didn’t have cold feet at all, but instead a flat tire in her bridesmaid’s car on the way from the city. It was a stressful day, to say the least, but at least it kept her busy, which kept her from thinking. Which was a good thing, because when she did have a quiet moment to think, her thoughts went directly to Logan. And the way he’d touched her, kissed her, and made her moan the night before. More than once.

She’d fallen asleep in his arms, completely content and exhausted from their passionate lovemaking, but she hadn’t been asleep very long when his touches had woken her again. He’d made love to her then slowly, from behind, half awake. He’d held her close, his arms keeping her in place as he kissed her neck and made her come again and again.

Just remembering the tender way he’d kissed her made her long for his touch again.

Earlier that morning, as the sun came up, they’d had a quick coupling. Almost frantic, as if once the night was over, so was their time together. And maybe it was.

After all, it wasn’t real.

It had been a mistake to let it happen at all. Faith couldn’t let it happen again. She couldn’t get used to being with him as if it were anything more than a stupid arrangement. A short-lived, stupid arrangement that would not only land her the biggest wedding andhugebusiness for Ever After but would also help her win the bet that would get Logan Langdon to finally leave her alone for good.

And that’s what she wanted.

Right?

Somehow, it didn’t feel like what she wanted anymore.

Not after what they’d shared the night before. That had felt…like trouble, was what it felt like.

Faith stood behind the bar and leaned against the door to the kitchen as she watched the groom toast his new bride. It had been a beautiful wedding. Their vows had been special and personal, and had even brought a tear to Faith’s eye. That almost never happened. Although, she couldn’t help but notice it was happening a little more often lately.

She felt him before she saw him. It had been such a busy day, they’d only barely crossed paths and hadn’t spoken any words to each other that weren’t directly related to the event at hand.

He stood close but didn’t touch her. “That was a close one today, wasn’t it?”

She nodded but didn’t turn. “I’m not going to lie, I thought we might have a runaway bride on our hands.”

“But you pulled it off, Faith. It was beautiful.”

Something about his voice sent a slow shiver through her, almost as if he’d touched her. Her body yearned for him. If she’d thought she’d got enough of him last night, the way her body vibrated just by having him close made it painfully clear that she hadn’t.

When he finally, lightly traced his fingers down her back, Faith’s instinct was to lean back against him and into his arms. It would be so easy to let Logan wrap his arms around her and pull her tight. But nothing with Logan was easy.

She needed to remember that.

Faith took a step to the side and Logan’s arm dropped.

“It’s like that, is it?”

It wasn’t like that. At least, she didn’t want it to be like that. But with Logan, was there any other way?

“Look.” She dropped her head. “It’s been a long day, and I don’t think that this is the time or the place to do this, okay?”

He looked affronted. “This? What exactly isthis,Faith?”

She shook her head, exhausted. “Logan, it’s not—”

“Don’t do this, Faith. Don’t do what you always do.”
