Dax seemed pleased with that idea and for the next thirty minutes of the drive chatted about New Zealand, and the film he was shooting. He mentioned his costar, Natalie Fear, quite a few times, which was probably normal considering they’d spent so much time together over the last few months, but Logan couldn’t help but think it was a little odd that he didn’t talk about his bride-to-be very much. Even when Logan tried to prompt him with questions, Dax skated over the details and went back to talking about movie production and what a blockbuster his latest film would be.
Logan certainly didn’t have a ton of experience with celebrities—none, really—so he tried to give Dax the benefit of the doubt, but he couldn’t help but feel like the man was nothing like Steph had described. She’d spoken about a sweet, doting man who was also not a fan of the fame that had been foisted on them. The man currently in the back of their SUV headed toward Glacier Falls and his bride was nothing like that. If anything, he was the exact opposite. Logan really didn’t want to judge the man too harshly, but his first impressions of Dax Combs were that he was a grade-A asshole and not at all worthy of marrying his new friend.
Not that he could say anything.
What would he say?
As soon as they pulled up into the yard at Ever After, the door to the house opened and Stephanie, red hair flying behind her, came running outside.
Logan and Levi watched as the man they’d just spent the last few hours with transformed before their eyes.
“There’s my little firecracker!” Dax yelled and, in two broad steps, crossed the distance toward his bride, wrapped her up tight in his arms, and swung her around in the most dramatic and movie-like scene Logan had ever witnessed in person.
The couple was still greeting each other with their tongues down each other’s throats, when Logan grabbed the man’s bags from the trunk and, together with Levi, walked around them to the porch, where Faith watched with wide eyes.
Logan tried to ignore the way his entire body stiffened the moment he caught sight of Faith. Or the way his stomach clenched or his breath caught in his throat. The full-body pull toward her was almost impossible to ignore, especially now that she’d…what? Broken up with him? Cast him out?
“That’s quite a welcome.” Faith laughed and shook her head a little. “You didn’t have any issues picking him up?” The question was directed to both of them, but Logan couldn’t help but notice she was looking directly at Levi when she asked.
“No issues,” he answered. “But, Dax is…” He pressed his lips together and tilted his head.
“He’s what?” She looked at Logan then, obviously searching for the answer. “Dax is—”
“Oh my God!” Stephanie interrupted them before Faith could get her answer. “Dax, you have to meet Faith.” Stephanie dragged her fiancé across the yard and to the porch. “Faith is Logan’s…girlfriend? Partner?”
Faith momentarily looked caught off guard, but she smiled and extended her hand to the celebrity. “Girlfriend,” she said smoothly. “I’m Logan’s girlfriend.”
Girlfriend?
So, she obviously hadn’t told Stephanie the truth yet then.Interesting.
Logan shot her a look, but she was steadfastly ignoring him, focusing instead on Dax, who was giving her a brilliant smile.
“Steph has told me so much about you,” he said to her. “And already the welcome’s been so great. I’m just beyond excited to get married to the love of my life here and what better place than this gorgeous ranch?”
Logan tried not to let his surprise show on his face, but one glance at his cousin told him he’d failed completely to hide his reaction.
Who the hell was this Dax?
He’d done a complete 180 since getting out of the car.
“It’s going to be amazing,” Faith said. “Why don’t you come inside and we can go over some of the details before you rest up.”
Levi led the way into the house, with Faith holding back.
She waited until they’d gone inside before turning around and facing him. “I didn’t tell her yet.”
“Obviously. So are we supposed to—”
“Maybe just keep your distance as much as possible until tomorrow. I’m not ruining her day when she’s so excited, and now that Dax is here and just as excited, I don’t think it’s a good time to tell them the truth.”
“About that.” He wasn’t going to say anything, but how could he not?
“About what?”
“Dax.” Logan took a breath. “I don’t think he’s exactly…well, I don’t know how to say this. But he was a totally different guy in the car. Like he didn’t even care about Steph or the wedding. He was more interested in getting attention for the wedding and—”
“That’s crazy, Logan. He’s obviously totally obsessed with her. I’m sure it’s just nerves and you guys just met. That would be weird.”
