I glanced around, dismayed to find that no one else seemed to feel similarly. They waited with bated breath as Gate lifted the limb over his shoulder, drawing back his arm.

Don’t! Don’t let him! No!

“Gate!” I cried a moment too late, reaching out in the hope of holding him still. “Don’t!”

But the limb was already in the air, already hurtling toward its destination. Poised to strike the ground just inches away from the rusted, decaying automobile.

When it struck, the world tilted sideways.

Everything happened at once. I looked to Bryce, who now understood the trap which had been set. To Logan, who tried to throw himself over Leslie and myself.

“Bryce!” I gasped, my voice lost in the earth-shattering explosion. I was going to lose him.

The force of the blast threw us all, sending us hurtling away from the bomb which had been left for anyone who happened to pass too close to the car.
