“Why did you say that?” I whispered when the three of them had gone on their way. “Just getting out to enjoy the day? It’s clear we’re doing more than that.”
“I didn’t hear you offering an explanation,” he muttered. “It doesn’t matter. Calm yourself down. If I’d have known how—”
He cut himself off.
I waited, staring pointedly while the others discussed how to progress.
Finally, he turned away, adding his voice to the discussion.
Before we headed into the woods, I took note of clouds building in the west.
