“Felt? As in past tense?”
“As in time moved on.”
I nod and we’re interrupted when Samuel walks into the room. He looks between the two of us suspiciously. I grab my beer, and Bexley opens the oven to check the turkey, while I check out her ass.
“You coming to watch the game?” Samuel asks, grabbing a soda from the fridge.
“Yeah,” I reply. “I was just getting a beer.” I make show of it in my hand. He nods, walking over to Bexley.
“Come out here,” he says. I watch the two together curiously.
“Be there in a minute. I’m watching this,” she nods to the stove, “until Ma gets back.”
“Okay. I’ll save you a seat.” He kisses her forehead, turning around and eyeing me as I chug my beer, trying to cool the fire burning in my chest.
I give him a wink and toss the beer into the trash as he exits the room. I check, making sure he’s gone before looking back at her. She licks her bottom lip.
“You’re wrong, you know? I never knew how you felt about me because you never said it.”
“Yeah, well, neither did you.”
“What if I said it now?” I ask, walking closer to her. She swallows as I near. “Would it be too late?”
I’m so close I could kiss her, but I make no move to do so. I reach up and run my finger over the faint scar on her jaw.
Her eyes jump between mine as her pupils dilate. I wonder if she’s wet between her legs. God, I’d love to reach my hand down the front of her jeans. I’d love to kiss her throat when her head falls back because I make her feel good.
“Answer me.”
“Wouldn’t that be breaking the rules or something?” she asks.
“Rules?”
“Ah, come on. You know there was always this invisible line we never crossed.”
“What if I crossed it now?”
Her eyes narrow in challenge. “What if you did?”
I bite my lip, looking down at hers.
“Johnny said there was beer in here?” Carson asks, walking in.
I clear my throat and step back from Bexley. Jesus fucking Christ, will these people stay the fuck out? “Yeah, man. In the fridge.” I keep my eyes on her as Carson gets what he wants and then leaves the room.
“We’re going out after. Come with us,” I say.
She makes a face like she’s not sure. “I came here with Samuel.”
“And you don’t want to leave him?” I ask.
“That would be rude, don’t you think?”
“I don’t care.”
“Of course, you don’t. But I do.”
I nod. “All right. Suit yourself. I better get back out there. He might get suspicious.” I smirk and exit the room.
