“Do you want to walk around with me or stay in my office?” Daddy asked.
“Stay in your office,” she replied without even thinking.
She didn’t want to be around when Daddy talked to her coworkers about her diagnosis, but she also didn’t want to be there as he talked with the others. Would they think bad of her for being here and not working?
Yeah, she didn’t want to be walking around with Daddy. He didn’t need her.
Daddy kissed her forehead before heading to the door. “Be a good girl and stay in my office while I’m gone. Don’t do anything naughty.”
CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
GENE
Gene sighed as he shut his office door behind him.
“Is everyone together?” Gene asked as he saw Ezekiel walking towards him.
“Yes, they are,” he replied.
Walking out of the building he saw everyone standing there, talking with each other. Part of him felt bad he was telling everyone about Sammi having diabetes but he needed her to be safe. He needed people to know if something happened when he wasn’t around.
Nothing could happen to her.
Nothing was going to happen to her. Not under his watch.
“Thank you for meeting up on such short notice,” Gene called out. “I’ll make this very brief. Sammi, one of your coworkers and my girl just got diagnosed with type one diabetes. I want everyone to be aware so if you see her working and something is off, that you know what might be the problem.”
“What if we know nothing about diabetes?” someone called out.
“I’ll be sending out an email with some of the symptoms. She’s on sick leave right now while she learns how to manage it. Hopefully when she comes back to work, she’ll know the signs to look out for and nothing happens. But I wanted to let people know so you are aware,” Gene explained. “That is all.”
Several people nod before walking away, getting back to work.
“Everything okay?” Ezekiel asked. “You can be honest. It’s just us two and you know I won’t say shit to other people.”
Gene sighed and looked back at his office. “I’ll be taking some time off to help her. She needs support and she’s coming to terms with the fact that her life is going to change a little.”
“Take all the time you need. I’ll watch over everything here and will let you know if I need anything,” Ezekiel patted his shoulder. “But how are you doing?”
Gene thought about it for a second. “Worried some. Just worried about her and how she’s going to deal with this.”
“With you by her side? She’ll be just fine.”
“Thanks. I’m going to go check on her and head home.”
Ezekiel walked away as Gene made his way back to his office. When he walked into his office, Sammi was sitting on her chair like he left her.
“You’re coming home with me and spending the night,” Gene declared, not giving her room to try and get out of it.
“I am?” her eyes were wide.
“Yes, you are.”
“Is everything okay? Did everything go okay?” She whispered, fidgeting with her hands.
Gene knelt in front of her, cupping her face. “Everything is okay. I just don’t think I’m ready for you to be away from me. Everything went smoothly. People know you have diabetes.”
“That’s sweet and a little possessive,” she chuckled.
