As I approach the table, Sebastian immediately stands to pull out my chair. I decide to take the high road and ignore any concerns I have about that woman. For all I know, it’s paranoia out to get me.
“Would you think me a total cad if I didn’t want to stay for coffee and dessert?”
My stomach flips, my mind instantly convinced he needs to get me home so he can meet up with the blonde later.
“No. It’s okay. I’ve had plenty, thank you.” I can’t keep the nervous edge from my voice.
Suddenly, I feel his warm hand under the table, sliding up my thigh. “Because I’m damn sure there’s nothing here that’s as sweet as what’s under that dress.”
I gasp, not at his provocative words but at his reassurance this night is all for me. That this incredibly sexy, successful man wants to be with me. His hand quickly moves to my chin, lifting my face to meet his.
“What is it, baby? Did I do something to upset you?” He looks genuinely concerned.
“No. That’s not it.” I pause. “I guess it’s going to take me some time to get used to all of this too.”
In the days that follow, I try to stay focused on what’s directly in front of me. My new job, my son, and my willingness to trust again. It’s been a few evenings since our date, and I admit, I miss Sebastian terribly when we’re apart. I guess this is how it is at the beginning of a relationship. So excited to see the other. I need to pace myself.
“Quitting time,” Jeff yells out.
“I thought seven o’clock would never get here,” I reply. Jeff has an odd expression on his face as he looks over my shoulder.
Following his gaze, I notice Sebastian in the doorway. “Ms. Potter. Can I see you for a moment?”
Unable to control my smile, I quickly stand. “Certainly, Dr. Lee.” Following him around the corner to a more private area in this fifty-bed emergency room, he looks down at me and smiles.
“How’s my girl?”
“Better now. I miss you.”
“Yeah?” I watch as he stands tall, adjusting his expensive gray silk tie. “Any chance you and Austin are free for dinner tomorrow night?”
“Both of us? We don’t go out much, Sebastian. Austin prefers to eat at home.”
“I meant my place. I wanted to do something to celebrate your achievements. I’m sorry it took me so long.”
This man. My heart is thumping in my chest at his kind gesture. Reaching out to him, I touch his arm. “We’d love to. Thank you. You really don’t have to do all of that for me. Just knowing you’re happy for me is enough.”
“Nonsense. I want to do it. Can you come by around six? You could bring suits if you want to hit the pool. It’s heated.”
Of course, it is. “No, not this time. Austin isn’t big into swimming. But thank you. We’ll see you at six.”
He gives me a sexy wink and walks down the hallway, and I try to wipe the dimple popping grin from my face before returning to Jeff. I’m not sure how I’d explain that.
“Come on in,” Sebastian greets as we stand on the porch alongside a beautiful chocolate lab that’s facing the door like he’s hitched a ride on this party invite.
“I think we have an unexpected guest.” I laugh, looking down at the well-behaved pup.
“Ah, that’s Boom.”
“How did I not know you had a dog?”
“I don’t. Boomerang just keeps showing up here. He’s kind of made himself at home. And I guess I kinda let him.” He stops for a moment and then narrows his eyes playfully. “Sounds like someone else I know.” He winks.
“What are we having for dinner?” Austin asks, surprising me.
I watch as Sebastian rubs his hands together in excitement, a look of utter glee on his face. “Well, we’re celebrating your mom passing her exam and getting her new job, but I picked out the dinner for you and me.”
I look at him curiously. What is he up to?
