“I heard you needed a signature,” a deep voice interrupts my inner dialogue.

Turning, I take in the man in question. Dr. Sebastian Lee imprinted on his starched white lab coat. “Yes, sir. I do.” My reply is jumpy, likely revealing my disappointment. He signs my form quickly and returns it, looking me straight in the eye.

“She’s making you work for it, huh?”

“What?”

“Ava’s a good girl. You’re lucky to have that one.”

“I’m not sure I follow. She asked you to sign my form. How lucky is that?”

He turns his head to look over his shoulder, and I follow his line of sight to one gorgeous blue-eyed blonde who’s leaning out of her office doorway, smiling in our direction. My fucking heart flips at the sight of her. What the hell, man. Get a grip. I need to not look like a sap in front of Dr. GQ here, but I can’t wipe the damn goofy smile off of my face.

“As I said,” he says, strolling past me toward the breakroom. Looking back toward my beauty, I discover she’s gone.Dammit.

I’ve just grabbed a beer from the fridge and plopped down on my couch to watch some Sports Center when my phone buzzes. Hopping up from my seat, I grab my cell from the kitchen counter. Praying it’s Ava, I’m let down when I see a number I don’t recognize.

“Hello?”

“Hey, is this Michael?”

“Yes.”

“Hey, it’s Trevor. We met recently fishing with Zach.”

“Oh, yeah. I remember. What’s up? Is he okay?” I’m certain I didn’t give Trevor my number. Not that I mind him calling, but it just never crossed my mind with him planning to leave for North Carolina.

“He’s fine. I called him and asked for your number. I hope that’s okay.”

“Sure. What’s up, Trevor?” The background noise is loud, similar to what you’d expect in a bar.

“I called because he told me you’d gotten back together with your girl. Ava, right?”

“We aren’t officially together. But I think things are heading in that direction. Why?” This is an odd time to have a relationship chat.

“Zach told me you were pretty stoked about having another shot with her. I was shocked the old curmudgeon was happy for you. He’s so down on relationships. But after he told me what you said she looked like, I figured maybe that was it. He wanted to see one of us with a hot chick,” he practically yells over the background noise.

This is nuts. Is there a point to this conversation? Maybe Trevor is drunk and losing it after getting dumped by his supermodel ex.“Trev-”

“Well, I think she’s here. And she’s with a guy I wouldn’t want my girl anywhere near.”

What the fuck?My back stiffens, and my arm hairs stand on end at this unexpected piece of intel. “What do you mean?”

“There’s a guy here a lot of the fellas from the fire department recognize. I’ve never met him, but I know he’s a real player. When I asked who the hot blonde was with him, they said her name was Ava. That she worked as a PA at St. Luke’s. Apparently, a few of the guys are friends with her friend, Eve. All I know is I’d get down here if I were you.”

“Where are you?”

“The club at 25thand Main.”

“I’ll be there in twenty. Thanks, man.”

“Don’t mention it.”

Hanging up the call, I grab my keys and head for the door. As I approach my car, I try to cool my jets. If I go down there half-cocked and make a scene, I’ll ruin the very thing I’m trying to repair here. But there’s no way I can stay home now and not obsess about this. I know Trevor was trying to do me a favor, but I hope I don’t lose my shit and push her away in the process.

I take the drive to the club as carefully as I can. Thank God I didn’t drink that beer. I’m probably going to need a stiff one once I get there.
