“I had lunch with Rachel today. She says hello by the way.” Nick remains quiet, causing me to tremble at sharing Rachel’s outlandish offer. “She wanted to do something for us.”
“Ah, that’s nice,” he mumbles. I worry the vigorous activity is catching up with him. I don’t want him to fall asleep.
“Did you hear me?”
“Yes, kitten. I heard you. Is she going to babysit the kids again?”
“No. It’s bigger than that.”
“Hmmm?”
“Nick, she offered to have our baby.”
Immediately, he stops moving. I consider whether he could’ve fallen into a deep sleep or if he’s as stunned by her offer as I was.
“She wants to donate her eggs and then be our surrogate.”
Still, nothing.Okay, Kat. You said you wouldn’t be overly disappointed by this. Plus, you sprung it on him after some hot and kinky sex. So, I’m sure he’s not paying any attention.
Rolling away from me, Nick sits up, a confused expression on his face. I prepare for his reaction. Why had I even brought this up tonight? I honestly should have waited. This is a lot to take in.
“Did you just say what I think you said?”
When you put it like that, I feel pretty stupid admitting it.“Yeah.”
I watch as he rubs his eyes with the palms of his hands and looks back at me in shock. “And what did you say?”
“Well, I told her I was honored that she’d consider giving us such a gift. It was incredibly generous. I said I’d talk to you about it, but regardless of how you felt, I’d be eternally grateful to her for considering something of this magnitude.”
“It’s amazing. That she’d even offer.”
“I know,” I tell him.
He remains quiet, I assume, trying to gather the right words. Sometimes it’s hard to spell my own name after we’ve had explosive sex like the kind we had tonight. I can only imagine how he’s trying to process this.
“Kat.” He exhales.
I don’t answer. I simply hang my head, hoping we can finish this conversation and go to bed. The day’s activities and emotions are quickly catching up with me.
“I want to do it.”
“Do what?”
“I want to have a baby with you. I mean, her. I mean-”
“What?” I bolt upright trying to clear my head to make sure I’m hearing him correctly.
“Kat. This is the best opportunity we have to find out what our biological child might be like. I was going to tell you I’d thought about our earlier talk and wanted to consider what our options were for one more. I’m scared whether this will work. I don’t want to see you or Rachel hurt if it doesn’t. But if she’s serious and this is what you want. I’m all for it.”
I practically tackle Nick, rolling us both over the bed until we almost tumble over the side. I’m scared too, but I want so much to take her up on her offer. Placing kisses all over his face, I’m ecstatic.
“You know there are no guarantees. It’s wonderful she’s offering this for us. But we need to agree to give it one shot. If it doesn’t work out, we accept our family of six is what God intended for us.”
“Yes. I understand,” I say as I bury my face in his neck. Never in a million years did I think he’d say yes.
“I love you, Kat,” he says against my neck.
“And, oh, how I love you.”
