“Thank you, Addison. No. I have the event planner handling all of that. Your presence is all that is required.”
“Okay,” I reply, hoping if I can be the compliant daughter, this painful, recurrent conversation will come to a much-needed end and she’ll leave, so I can focus on something much more appetizing. Like candy cocks. I bite my lip to prevent my internal laughter from bringing a scolding.
“I’ll expect to see you early that evening to help,” she says as she turns toward the door without a hug goodbye.I thought she had an event planner. Why does she need me there early?
“Yes, ma’am.”
“Goodbye, dear.” She gives me a small noncommittal wave over her shoulder before heading out to her shiny black Mercedes. It looks even prettier parked next to my used Kia Sorrento that, as of yesterday morning, is missing a door handle. The damn thing fell off right into my-
“You, okay?”
“What?”
“I tried to give you some privacy, but I couldn’t help overhearing, doll. I’m sorry. Your mom’s a witch.”
“She’s not that bad. Well… maybe she is. But it hasn’t been fun being the dumb member of the family.”
As if the world has suddenly turned on its axis, I’m spun toward Alden like I’m on the Tilt-A-Whirl ride at the county fair.
“You listen here, Addison Briggs. You’re one of the smartest, kindest, most creative people I know. Don’t you dare let her into your head.”
“I know. You’re right. When I keep my distance, I feel better about myself. But you don’t know how hard it is, Alden. Ever since I was little, I’ve struggled with reading and writing. The guidance counselors brushed it off, saying the world was moving toward computers, and I didn’t need to worry about it. I’d find ways to compensate. But it impacts everything.”
Tears begin to well in my eyes. Tears I’ve managed to hold back for years. How do I let this woman get to me? Why wouldn’t any rational mother see how hurtful their words are? I didn’t choose this. I’m trying to make the best of my situation. Thank god I enjoy creating edible art. Even if it’s X-rated.
I turn away from him, hoping to hide my tears, focusing instead on my job. Reaching for a bright purple candy dick, I pop it in my mouth and let the delightfully sweet taste dance on my tongue. It’s an absurd diversion, but just what I need right now. “Want one?” I can’t help but laugh at the outrageous look on Alden’s face when I present him with a hot pink penis.
“Hell no.” He shakes his head, returning to the front of the store to look out of the window. “Are you going to have those things ready within the hour? I need to head out soon if I’m going to get them there in time.”
“Yeah. I’m almost done. She’s having quite the party.” I laugh, looking at the two dozen cupcakes in front of me. I don’t think I know two dozen people, men and women combined, worthy of inviting to a party.
“Addy?”
“Yeah?”
“You know, I’ll do anything to help. If there’s something you need-”
“I’m good, Alden. Thank you, though.” After today, what I really need is a drink.
CHAPTER9
Trevor
“This place is morecrowded than I expected,” I yell over the sound of Sia playing in the background.
“Well, it’s practically the only place in town. So the weekends can get busy,” Jason answers.
Looking about the moderately-sized bar, I see a few women not on social security yet. They aren’t necessarily unattractive, but there’s no desire to try for more. But it’s early. I need to remain optimistic. There’s got to be some hot little number in this town.
As if on cue, the front door opens, bringing uproarious laughter and with it a stunning blonde and a familiar sassy brunette.Be careful what you wish for.
From the corner of my eye, I catch the moment she’s noted my presence. I keep my gaze trained on the mirror over the bar, watching as I finish off my pale ale as if nothing else matters. I observe as she strolls arm in arm with the blonde stunner to a corner table. They’re barely seated before multiple men stop by their table to greet them.
“Hey, Alden,” Jason greets the last of the trio who strolls over to our spot at the bar.
“How’s it going, Jas?”
“Good. Have you met Trevor?”
